Since it's in Knight's contract that his son Pat would be his successor at Texas Tech, I think with a sub-par season he decided to let his son gain some head coaching experience to prepare for next season.
 
I heard one sports caster say that it's in his contract for his son to take over, but the college just got a new Chancellor that might block it when he takes over, so Knight did this today to get his son in place before hand.
