I was needing a couple inexpensive fixed blades for bags/camping/whatever so I jumped on the condor bandwagon to try them out. I picked two models I found discounted that interested me. The sheaths on these knives are surprisingly high quality leather.

Rodan - I wanted a full handle and the blade length was what I needed. Despite some bad reviews i read on it. The knife will suit my needs, but I might reshape the handle and smooth out a couple rough edges. It was reasonable sharp and ready to go to work for me.

Tolozo - I liked the look of this knife and the extended handle in mycarta. It was well balanced and fit my hand perfectly. This knife at almost twice the cost was not nearly as finished as the rodan. The handle was rough and the blade was rougher. I will be smoothing out the edges on the handle prior to use.

At first I thought the blade was chipped out for about an inch or so. At closer inspection it was the burr from the marginal sharpening efforts. I stropped it off and found the blade still quite dull. I determined the bevel was too wide for my spyderco sharpener so I dragged out the lansky. It was still beyond the reach of the 30 angle. I estimate portions of the blade are 40+ and unevenly ground. I free handed it for a while and made an improvement, it am not quite happy with the edge

Should I reprofile this with a belt sander to get it to 30 and keep it there with my normal kit of sharpeners or live with it as is and keep trying to improve the edge freehand? Anyone drastically used 30 for a camp type use bevel?

Take it to the belt sander--providing you have suitably fine belts. In terms of the Rodan handle I suggest getting some good extended field time with it before deciding to mod the handle. Many folks think the handle is chunky when it's on their table top, but once they get out in the field with it they find it's just right.

About the handle, I found that to be the case with some of the machetes grips as well. Felt to big in the store, but I knew I could change that if I didn't like it. Haven't done a thing to it after actually using it.
