I read at a knife dealer that this lovely thing is discontinued. Does anyone know if this is true and if so why? I thought it was pretty popular. Also, if it is so, are they maybe replacing it with something else?

Umm...I don't THINK they're being disco'd. Mind posting a cut/paste quote from the site?

I guess it's not exactly deal spotting when it is not available from the site. Make a google search for "condor barong machete knifecenter" and you'll find the link (you won't find it by searching on their site). That's the only source I've seen claiming this though. I hope it's still in production, but if it isn't, I'm sure glad I managed to snatch the last one at Newgraham.

edit: Wait, is Knifecenter an associated dealer with BF? I didn't know that, here's the link: http://www2.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail_discontinued.html?s=CN48014HC

If you notice the sheath they show is the original triple-snap style which they poorly photoshopped to visually eliminate the flap. :p But perhaps they dropped that item from THEIR selection. They still have the Beaver Tail on their site and I know that one IS going to be phased out.

As an option to the Condor Barong though discontinued by Cold Steel their Barong is still available at a bargain price $11.99 including a very decent sheath. From what I gather the factory in China was destroyed by fire so no more CS Barongs or Sax. I personally found the Chinese CS machetes to be superior both in overall quality and grip design to their South African made models.

Personally I like the Chinese CS machetes except for the rubber handle, which causes massive hot spots during extended use if actually swinging the tool like a true machete.

Interesting. Personally I found the current RSA made Cold steel machete handles to be poorly shaped with low CQ so very uncomfortable in comparison to the their Chinese made machete's grip which I found very comfortable in both shape and material in comparison. I refuse to own a RSA made Cold Steel machete for this reason- all day chopping comfort. Different strokes for different folks. ;)

The handle SHAPE is better on the Chinese-made CS machetes but I much prefer polypropylene over rubber for extended use. The good news about the South African machetes is that if the grips are too chunky for you (they're sized best for very large hands) you can whittle them down then sand and torch them to restore a uniform smooth surface. Just my thoughts. :)
