Condor Golok or Kukri?

which would be better for yard work? bush, brush, 2 inches in diameter is probably the max width of anything ill chop.

had some very strong winds recently, and bushes, branches and such need some clearing. figure itll be a good reason to get a chopper. :rolleyes:

i was going to pick up a cold steel kukri, since its inexpensive.
but did some research, and noticed the Condor Kukri, and Golok, and like the styling of them more, and cost only a little more.

i dont have any experience using choppers, machetes and kukris, so im not looking to spend alot just yet.

kukris seems good overall, but the condor golok is just plain sexy!
your expertise would be greatly appreciated. thanks
 
Condor Golok. I love mine. I like my Cold Steel 2 handed machete but the the Condor Golok steel takes and keeps a much better edge.

By far I think Condor is the champ for price/value ratio. And for the price at home mods are not out of the question:

I have the Condor Kukri and the Condor Parang, but no Golok yet.

The Kukri will handle any of that stuff under 2" with no problem. Probably one swipe, It is unbelievably sharp. It is capable of some heavier chopping too. Nice edge.
The real advantage of it is that it is lighter and quicker, so you can handle it for a longer time before you get tired.

The Parang is longer and heavier and has a lot more chopping power.
But it is heavier and weighted toward the end, so it will tire you out quicker. Also super sharp and a great convex edge.
Chops as well as a light axe.

I imagine the Golok is in-between the two.

One thing I would say is that if you need any reach to get to the place you need to cut, then the longer blade will help. I prefer my Parang because of its 17.5" blade length. And it is a wicked blade!
 
I pretty much agree with everything said above. It's really a matter of preference between the two. They'll both do a great job of hacking up yard stuff. You'll be able to get faster tip speed out of the thinner Kukri, though, so it may fare better on the light stuff you seem to be mostly tackling.

right now im leaning towards the kukri cause it might make the job easier. but i love the look of the machete
 
Dude, that Kukri is 13 inches of razor blade!
You will not believe how razor sharp that thing is, and with a high-polished convex edge!
I was bleeding before it got out of the box! It was sharper out of the box than any knife I ever got from any maker.
I don't know if I got lucky, or if they are all that way, but my Condor Kukri will cut you even if you get near it!
Somebody definitely spent some time making that polished edge. I have never had a knife with a polished edge like that from the factory. On most knives you can see the grind marks on the edge bevels. This thing is like a mirror finish.
And my Condor Parang is the same way!

Just be careful taking it out of the box!
 
just came back from my local cutlery shop.
they didnt have any Condors, but i did get to handle the cold steel kukri, and magnum kukri.

the edge on the cold steels are coated, and dull. i mentioned it to the guy, and he said he would sharpen it for me if i bought it.
i said deal, and walked out of there with a magnum kukri. price was MSRP, but still only cost about $33. i still have enough in my budget to get the golok :o
i really wanted to get the condor, but i always try and support the local shops.

Convexing the edge on my CS magnum khukri really helped a lot. (But I have a belt sander, and a strop!)
 
I have the Cold Steel Kukri and a Golok. If you sharpen the Kukri it works quite well, and even makes a pretty interesting throwing knife as well, but the Golok is far better at heavier stuff and probably better all around.

I wish theyd make the Golok 2 inches longer though, i gots a Parang on order maybe that will be closer to my ideal.

That and lightly sanding the handle with 600 grit paper to gently blunt the points of the checking will get it in good usable shape for sure.

Indeed. Mine was a mess out of the box, and my Condor Parang was only moderately sharp, at best. No biggie. I Reprofiled (used a file) and sharpened them up. I like both of them. The Cold Steel Mag Kukri bites deep and is lite. I like it for branches and lighter stuff. The Parang is 1\4 inch thick down the spine and has real heft to it. I prefer it when I know that I want to chop thicker saplings\brush. The Cold Steel is not flimsy, and fairly rugged, but it's a real ugly beater (although effective). The Parang is actually nice to look at\handle. I rubbed mineral oil into the wooden gips 2-3 times and a hint of wood grain came up. The Parang looks and feels much more solid and attractive to me. I find it to be quite effective also but it will bounce off with a glancing blow if the chopping angle is too shallow. I would buy both again.
