Hi everyone,
I really like my Condor Parang. I never saw a bolo/machete blade that thick before, but I have no doubts as to its chopping ability. Here's a pic for those who may not know about them:

Note the handle. It gets much thicker toward the end, so my grip seems not as tight because the pinky and ring fingers don't wrap around as much. I like the slight bend common to such choppers.

Would anyone know if this is just how parang handles were traditionally made (i.e. part of the authentic original design)? I can live with it, but was just curious. I might try wrapping grip tape around it to see if it feels more "secure".

Thanks in advance!

That is one common design for working tools. It allows your hand to slide slightly along the grip without giving-up control of the blade.

You do not hold it in a "death grip" when making chops, as you should give it a snap at the wrist and let your first 2 fingers have some play to add cutting power to the blade. The widened end prevents the blade from slipping out of your hand.

This method saves your wrist, elbow and arms from shock during long periods of work while letting the blade do the cutting work for you.

Personally, I'd sand that sucker smooth to get rid of any hot spots rather than grip tape it.

Yea, some gritty grip tape will wear your hand out. I've put tennis racket grip tape on choppers before and liked it.I can't find black anymore though and I hate the blue and other colors I'm able to get nowdays.

CWL, R.H. Clark: Thanks for the explanation. I suspected that the wider base would prevent the handle from slipping out.

I think I'll look into sanding it to take out hot spot and hopefully a more comfortable grip, as well as the type of tape for racquets. Thanks again.
