If you want it for serious chopping I'd go with the larger Kumunga. The Varan is a compromise between chopping ability (Kumunga) and general knife usage (Rodan). It really strikes the balance nicely, but I'd call the Kumunga the dedicated chopper/batoner.
 
If you want something to chop, I'd suggest you look at their machetes a little more. The Kumunga is the better knife for a chopper, however Condors machetes will chop better then their knives will.
