Conflicted! Regarding "Tweener Knives" and Super Steels.

Hi all,

I mostly like "Fixed" blade knives, especially small (2.5" to 3") fixed blade knives. I'm in the market for a (so called) "Tweener" (Bushcraft/Survival/Woods/Hunter/SHTF/Camping etc. etc etc.) type knife as I don't really own this size knife (4" to 6") in my collection. I spent the entire evening last night researching reviews/video's/etc. mostly of the usual suspects such as ESEE, BECKER, etc. and then.....(for better or worse) I started reading the thread on SURVIVE! Knives. Well, I'm falling in love with (when available) the SURVIVE GSO 5.1 as it appears to be an awesome performer. Now, here's where I am conflicted......cost. So BF fans, are Super Steel Knife really worth the price vs. performance ? One could buy THREE (perhaps ever four) BK-16's for the cost of one (admittedly beautiful) GSO 5.1 Knife. Truthfully, while I'd like to (someday) own the likes of a GSO 5.1, it's price is just more expensive that I can justify. I'm also open to suggestions for a "Tweener". I'm leaning towards the BK-16. Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Is the price increase from the BK-16 to the GSO indicative of 20cv's or 3v's performance increase over 1095? Probably not. But do I think the GSO is worth it relative to the rest of the knife market? Absolutely.

The handle is one of the most comfortable that I've felt, and while 20cv or 3v may not be lightyears ahead of 1095, they are certainly much better steels. I'd say get the GSO, fondle it, and use the crap out of it. There is some strange satisfaction I get when I use an expensive, beautiful knife very hard instead of babying it. It's what they're made for.

Hi S-Dog,

Yes indeed. I've heard that the GSO handle are VERY comfortable and that is a big plus in my book. Then again, I've heard that the BK-16 handle are also quite comfortable. I've heard complaints about some of the ESEE knife handles not being user friendly/comfortable but, then again, I hear other ESEE users say it is very comfortable. I guess it all has to do with ones hand size/shape. I wish there were a store where I could find a SURVIVE! knife and handle the GSO 5.1 to find out for myself.

I think it comes down to the fact that in the end, it is just a knife and when you're outside beating on it you probably won't stop and think, "Damn, I should have gotten the GSO." As long as you get the best value for the amount of money you're comfortable spending, then you did pretty good. But just remember, the GSO is more expensive for a reason (or a number of them).
