Confused about 301 markings.

Today I bought a Buck 301. It looks like a 301. What is confusing me are the blade markings, or lack thereof. The main blade is marked with three lines:

line 1 BUCK
line 2 A symbol (very small to my old eyes) which may be an anvil.
line 3 USA (smaller than BUCK in line 1)

I thought all Buck knives were marked with a date code since 1986?

This appears to be a new knife. It looks to have the 2000 grind and the box was one of those multi-colored jobs, reminicient of the web site.

It is my new everyday work knife. Wonderful workmanship. Just confused.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Mike,
In celebration of Buck's Centennial they changed the symbol for this years production to an anvil. You did not give enough info to be sure it is a 301. Hope this clears up the date code issue for you!

I know it is a 301. The box is marked 301. It is 3-3/4" long closed and has a main clip blade plus the two smaller blades, the names of which escape me for the moment.

I was just wondering why one of the blades was not stamped 301. Have they stopped indicating model nr. on thier knives?

It's not a problem. It's just that every other Buck I have has the blade stamped with the model nr. except my 35 year old 105 I got when I was in the Coast Guard.

Mike,
For this year only, thank goodness, all model numbers have been replaced with the anvil. It does make for confusion trying to identify a knife, but it does make the knife somewhat collectible.

Thanks Joe.

BTW, I like this knife. To me the best feature is having the blades straight in line with the springs. I really dislike blades which are ground off center or bent (?) to make them fit next to other blades.

You guys do it right. I also appreciate having some thickness to the blades.

It's my EDC, and I think it will stay that way for years to come.
