So what is up with the different labels on their knives? One will have Northfield the other Tidouite (sp?)? Is there more then one manufacturing facility or is GEC a parent company?

Edit: Also, how do you pronounce Tidouite (sp?)?

. Northfield and Tidioute if I remember correctly are brands that GEC aquired rights to use. Basicly Northfield is GEC's "higher" end brand, meaning have swedges, long pulls, more exotic materials like mother of pearl, snakewood, sometimes pinches and or slanted bolsters. Bit more exotic materials, swedges, long pulls, mirror finish and such. Tidioute is GEC's bit simplier brand. blades usually are not mirror finished and knives are tad more simplier in terms of jigging and general finish. Northfield usually have end capped version of the knife while Tidioute's version usually do not.

So simply: Northfield: more fancier finish and materials and Tidioute: less fancy, simplier.

I will add that Northfield and Tidioute were brands that thrived in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Every now and then some of these old original knives can still be found. I would love to own an original of either brand.

Tiddy - oot. (oot as in "boot")

Thanks for that, Keith. That's the way I have been pronouncing it but I never was really sure if it was right.

You're welcome, Rick. (I have to confess I often wondered if it was ....... (trying to keep this family friendly) ....... related to a woman with a loose bra strap). ;)

I spent a lot of time in Western PA as young man. My uncle had a camp on the Alleghany River near Tidioute. Being boys we were always snickering when one the grownups referred to Uncle Angelo's town.

FYI
Tidioute is a borough in Warren County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. The name is a Iroquoian word meaning "protrusion of land", referring to a sharp bend in the Allegheny River.

I walked into GEC and asked the very same question. Actually, I was a tad worse, because I asked what "Northfield U-N-X-L-D" (I actually said every letter...) meant. The guy very friendly-like explained that when you say it all together, it says "unexcelled". :o I felt like a bit of a dunce, but thats OK.
