I ordered some belts (for the first time ever) and was a bit confused by the 2x72-400XF A45 953FA Trizact Structured Ceramic, it looks like it has about the same grit as the other 36 grit belt to me though it is structured pyramid shaped ceramic. I thought it was a 400 grit belt? Is it a 400 grit belt and my eyes are deceiving me? There was no image on the website. This is the link to it:

Here was my entire order:

2 x 2x72-120 XK760X Ceramic (BVSM272-0120-760)
1 x 2x72-36 XK760X Ceramic (BVSM272-0036-760)
3 x 2x72-60 XK760X Ceramic (BVSM272-0060-760)
1 x 2x72-Leather Stropping Belt (LTHR272-LEATHER)
2 x 2x72-220 707JE Regalite Ceramic (BL3M272-0220-707)
2 x 2x72-400XF A45 953FA Trizact Structured Ceramic (BL3M272-0400-953A45)
1 x 2x72-SSFN Scotch-Brite Silicon Carbide Super Fine Low Stretch (BL3M272-SB-SSFN-LS)

I ordered some more belts I may need to get another few steps between the 400 and 1200 grit. :

2 x 2x72-400 RB346MJ Aluminum Oxide (BHRM272-0400-346J)
2 x 2x72-1200 SA331 Soft Back Micron Aluminum Oxide (BDER272-1200-331)

The 36 grit belt looks like it will leave some seriously deep scratches and I am a bit worried about that... I have no idea how many belts I will go through for the size knife I am making (overall length 18", blade width 2", thickness 3/8"). Hopefully I don't have to stop to wait for more. Happy Friday everyone!

3M uses the European Grit so A45 is 280 grit

Thanks, the pyramids are definitely tricking my eyes. 280 still seems high for these particular belts, they look like 36 grit to me, it must be the way the pyramids are laid out on the surface which gives it a higher grit. I may post a picture of the belts later today. I didn't yet check on the reverse side of the belt for specific info.

I usually order about 150 to 200 belts at a time. I used to do the onesey twosey belt orders.....and then I started messing around with CPM154

They are rated differently, here is something I copied from USAknifemaker supply

Grading Chart for the Trizact Belts

A300 – Like P80

A160- Like P120

A100- Like P180

A65- Like 240

A45- Like P400

A30- Like P600

A20- Like P1000

A5- Has no grade Its finer than the FEPA Grading lines.

They all feel about the same....roughness, for lack of a better term.

Guys
For those of you who haven't dealt with abrasive belt grits and are trying to make sense of it, this might help, remember I said might.
There are two different grading systmes that use the word "grit", one is the CAMI system of grading, which is what used to be standard in the US, and the other is the FEPA, refered to as the metric grit sytem. FEPA places a P in fromt of the grit designator CAMI doesn't use any letter just numbers. A P400 ALUMINUM OXIDE belt is roughly 280grit on the CAMI scale.
You can search on line for cross reference sheets.
Now the wrench in the works statement: Due to the way the various abrasive grits shatter, the shapes they shatter into and their hardness, the scratches they produce can be quite different than expected for the grit o the belt. Take a new belt, say 120 grit (this would be on the CAMI scale) and apply it to a test sample of steel. Mark this sample as new 120 and set aside. Now using a worn 120 grit belt off the same mfg and and type, abrade another piece of steel from the same sorceuas th first. Inspect them under a good magnifier or microscope. Assuming you ran them fast enough to shater the grit and not just round off the shoulders, you should see a difference.
