So I received a Manix 2 XL today, (Sold officially from Amazon) And the left hand side, far left pocket clip screw hole isn't drilled all the way through. If I weren't a lefty, I wouldn't have noticed this. What should I do? Also, how did this pass the Spyderco QC? (Along with slightly off allignment when closed)

Two options as I see it. 1. Send it back to Amazon. You'll have a new knife in a week. 2. Send it to Spyderco. Option one is the likely the fastest and the one I'd go with.

I'm still wondering how this got through quality control.
Look.. They can't look at every single knife. Typically in mass manufacturing they pull one product every "X" number of products ran.. Maybe its 100 and do a QC check.. If theres an issue with that knife they will then look at that batch, or all the knives ran since the last QC check. Not hard to see how a machine could screw one up in the middle of a batch and it go unnoticed.

I doubt there's any company mass producing anything that hasn't let a few bad ones get out. Nature of the beast. And I am not a Spyderco fan and haven't ever owned one of their products.

Because, just like 99.9% of all consumer goods, not every single detail of every single knife is inspected. I'd be surprised if Spyderco, or any other knife manufacturer with the possible exception of boutique shops like CRK and Randall, gives every single knife even a cursory inspection.

What are you talking about? These aren't Kinder Eggs... Each one of these knives is hand assembled and hand packaged. They may not check the pocket clip holes on each one (possibly no system is in place to Poka Yoke it) but I guarantee you they "look" at each knife. I built quality checking systems for 10 years: 100% verification is much more popular than you think, often at many stages along production. It is very costly to close a line when that 1 in 100 is out of spec.

I don't think that you are confused. I think that you are frustrated and want to vent your spleen a bit. Go ahead, it is the great purpose of the internet! :)

It would be very simple to take off the scale and drill through the rest of the hole. The scale comes off without complete disassembly, and you can just spin a sharp drill bit with your fingers if you don't have a drill press.
That's what I would do rather than sending it anywhere and waiting for a week plus.

Technically yes, any modifications void the warranty and if you want to stay on the very safe side then send it in.

Really though its such a minor fix I'd put it on the same level as filing the injection site down on a molded plastic scale. Just about impossible to do any harm to the knife.

Whatever you're comfortable with, just sharing how I would go about fixing it.

I would suggest returning it to Amazon. They will send you a replacement.

This. As always, if something isn't right the first attempt should be returning it to the place of purchase for an exchange. If that fails, warranty service. Then the thread explaining the issue, what was done to resolve it, and finally the conclusion. These threads are always incomplete because they lack conclusion.
