Confusion about CPM S30V and RitterGrip

I have spent the last 3 days reading dozens of threads on 4 different forums in regards to chipping in S30V blades and the Ritter knife. I did this because I originally was doing research before buying a Ritter SRK Mk1 in this steel. Should I delay the purchase ? There seems to be two minds on these matters in regards to the knife and to the steel in general.

There are two minds on the subject, so asking for more opinions will just produce more of the same result.

You'll have to get a knife or two with S30V and put it through your paces to see what you think.

S30V is a very good steel. That is pretty much a given. Some people have got bad examples which chip easily. I think this is a matter of heat treat, and a matter of bad luck with the batch.

It is an excellent knife. But it, and you will like it. If you don't, I have no doubt that you can sell it or trade it. And I beleive Areomedix WILL replace your knife if that blade chips. I have many knives that have S30V, and I have NOT had any problems with it.

I should have mentioned I have a LW Harsey Ranger, BM Skirmish, and a Wally World Native but while all will sharpen with no problem I have not actually used them to any large degree. This lack of direct knowledge makes me hesitate to buy another knife in this metal.

There really isn't any confusion, there has been a high frequency of problems with the blades with chipping, but there is never going to be uniform experiences. Even if for example the steel was so inconsistent that 50% of it was bad there would probably be 5% reported problems due to how many knives which are sold and never used or only used very lightly or those individuals just don't have forum access. Some people just don't seem to understand that using a knife without a problem doesn't invalidate someone else having one. However if you get the knife and you do have a problem it will get replaced/refunded so you are only really risking a little more time.

I have both sizes of Ritter RSK's in S30V as well as a Spyderco Native in S30V. All of them have been used to some extent, the Ritters more than the Native. The mini-RSK is my current EDC and the larger RSK is my camping / hiking carry. I have had no problems using cleaning or resharpening any of the 3... no chips... no breaks... nada.

I have, among other knives, a large Ritter in S30V and a Spyderco Native in S30V. The Ritter has experienced no chipping at all. The Native on the other hand has had a number of chips. However, after some work on both a coarse and fine DMT stone, and then the Sharpmaker, the chips came out. Time, and usage, will tell whether or not they reappear. As said before, the grind on the Native out of the box is pretty coarse. But for $40 bucks...use it and abuse it!
