i thought that the esee fire kit( current version) came with a misch metal rod, but now ive seen some posts saying otherwise. which is it sparks or molten bars? also if it is not misch metal , how would you be able to replace it with one?

i believe the old version has the misch metal in it, but the new ones dont. it is epoxied in, so you will have to heat the handle up to loosen the epoxy then switch out the rods, and re-epoxy it to hold it in place

The newer kits are not misch metal. I purchased several misch metal rods (Badger Firesteel - Misch Metal Ferro Rod Blank - 3/8" x 4) from going gear. Make sure to get the 3/8" diameter. I popped out the old rod by placing a metal rod inside the capsule and banging it against the work bench. I then epoxied the new rod into place.

Here are a few pics for you. If I were to do it again, I would get the 3" rod instead of the 4" (when I placed my order, the 3" was out of stock). I also suggest to pick up a few fire strikers so you can save the edge of your knife.

You can see that the stock rod is about 2".

You can see the red area on the stock rod is where they epoxied it.

Mine still throws globs and its glued in. Not as much as my going gear but definetly more than my LMF. And that using the same striker for each one. There's got to be some more of the softer stuff in it than the LMF. I like it though, it makes it easier to light with.

i have two of the new (non-misch metal rod) fire kits and i just heated up the base with a lighter for a few seconds and the epoxy softened right up enough for me to pull the rod out. i replaced it with a misch metal rod which i epoxied.

edit: i use goinggear.com and firesteel.com strikers on non-misch rods and it throws nice sparks too and hasn't really prevented me from lighting fires. i just like misch metal better for the fun factor since i play with them all the time just to freak out my sheeple friends :D

I’ve got two of the misch kits, they rock. Don’t remember the exact date, but it seemed like it was around February about the time of the name change that they were having issues with their misch rod supplier so they went to a standard ferro rod. Kind of cool that you can replace the rod by melting out the epoxy.

Both of my kits are screwed in. I’m curious if the hole in the body is the same size so if and when I replace my rods I could just epoxy them back in?

The hole should be close to the same size so you should be able to swap it out.

Forgot I had this video up still:

First two are misch with SAK, Third is ferro with SAK, then ferro with an Izula. As you can see, while not as violent as misch, ferro is still plenty of sparks and balls to get fire started.
