Congratulations to Travis Wertz this week's forge and fire champion. I have two of Travis' grinders they are very well made.

Good job some of you guys. Kidding

Really everyone did great. Congrats Travis.

I enjoyed this episode.

Well I guess I will watch it anyways

SPOILERS!

I found it to be a great episode, maybe because I have met all contestants but Tom and Travis had me laughing. If anyone has ever been to the Wuertz farm for a hammer in then you'd see that Travis literally never stops. The whole 120 mph comment was as true as it gets. Great job everybody, good show.

Congrats Travis! Both pieces were really well done and beautiful.

Overall, I thought it was a really good episode, and definitely one of the closest first round cuts I think they've had. Everybody did a great job.

As for the young smith, Morgan? That kid has got some skill! I was very impressed, and really hated to see him have those problems, and wished they could have still been able to test the swords.

So does anybody else forge with a 30 lb sledge? :D

Congrats Travis! on the win! I hated to see that kid have those problems, felt bad for him and Travis even though you used mystery steel and everyone knows that's a sin Ill still speak to ya' :D

I'll have to say last night's Forged in Fire was the best yet - EVERYONE did a GREAT job on first go around, and Travis - what an impressive job of forging first knife.

Not trying to be a "know it all", but I've always felt forge welding should be passed on FiF unless it's specifically called for. Just one more thing that can go wrong, and it does seem the majority of the time, something does pop up on a forge welded item.

GREAT JOB!!!!

I think that's JUST the reason they put it in.

Good episode.

I get workbench envy when I watch that show.
Nice steel tables.

I wonder how Mardi would have done. He seemed like the guy with the right plan from the beginning and was cut for cosmetic issues. Would've been cool had they let all the knives go into testing since they were all so close in round 1. They were all really nice blades.

And I still wish they'd show the smiths' last names.

And if you're going into the show it may not be a bad idea for the guys to have a couple of 4 x 72 inch bars of some reliable steel on hand so they can crank something out at the last minute if they need to. Seeing that guy spend the entire week working on one sword and then falling apart at the last minute with no backup plan sucked.

Finally watched the show. Maybe the best episode yet as far as folks turning out nice work right at the start.
Congrats Travis. Very well done.

Welding coil spring together, to itself has been notorious historically for being a pain in the butt..Most of your coil spring is a chromium alloy of some type..5160,6150,9260 etc..Its the chrome in it..It can be done for sure but it takes a little extra patience, prep and caution to get it right every time..
Ive seen exp smiths beat thier brains out trying to weld 5160 to itself, then Ive seen plenty of others do it right every time..I never had problems welding 5160 to itself in a coal forge but have had it want to not stick in a gasser..Personally I think a chromium steel needs a bit more heat to weld right. I may be off the rails on that but it worked for me..

A much more enjoyable show this week. Congrats to Travis and the other smiths too, that first round was awesome.
