Over the last 3 days I had two close bear encounters. The first one was in my back yard. The bear walked though my woods then up the driveway. I got that one on video. The reason for my title will become apparent near the end of the video. It's actually two videos from two different perspectives. One from an Ipod the other from a Sony AS15 action cam.

The next encounter happened a few hours ago today during a conditioning hike. I intended to go to my friction fire spot on a local blue trail system which is situated higher up. That thread is here.

On the very same thick moss covered spot as I did a friction fire practice only a few days before and last night was a bear. I hike this trail at least 3-4 times a week, sometimes at night. It ran but going forward is some cliffs so not looking to give the critter a feeling of being boxed in I turned back calling my hike off early. I suspect it's after the Blueberries and Hucks that will be in ready soon. That thread has a pic showing my pack on moss is the exact spot of that encounter. I guess we both liked to rest on thick soft moss.

Very cool, Woods Walker! What region of CT are you in?

Fairfield county. A day later had another encounter on a local trail which I use for day/night hikes and friction fire practice. That bear was sitting on my favorite patch of moss in the high scrub. Now I gotta find a new spot. LOL. We also had two Bob cats in the yard late this winter. Our property backs into a bunch of woods. I can fish for trout in the back yard which is cool.

yeah it's been a tough winter...looks like i'll have stiff competition for when the blueberries in my area ripens too.

Thats Cool, damn things are everywhere here. Cant feed the birds anymore . If its not a Bear its an Elk that cleans out the feeder.

You cant really see but this ole Bear has its left rear leg gone, gets around just fine. What do I call him??? Of course "Tripod"

Looked like a natural bear doing ordinary natural bear things. It was obviously trying to avoid you, and would have ran if you chased it.
I would be totally unconcerned.

I would have preferred it leave a little faster. As stated I ran into another or the same one, dang if I know on a local trail 4 miles away in high country scrub a day later. That one took off like a flash at first sight though it was I who turned around as it was the woods after all. I am more used to that kinda encounter than the slow rambling away. My yard it leaves, the woods I go. Seems rather fair given the amount of woods in my area.

I saw on facebook this morning a black bear was struck and killed on 33 in Fairfield County. They are creeping into Ohio now.

Ohio? We had one in our back year seven years ago. 24 miles east of Cleveland. Just passing through on a loop from PA and back again. They said it was a young male checking things out. Dogs went absolutely nuts all over the area.

You can't outrun a bear !!! [up to 35 MPH ]
This mating season for bears ! Young ones are on their own and males are wandering all over !

In Newburgh NY last week a bear wandered across the 300/17K intersection .A major intersection always traffic ,cars slammed on brakes people were like seeing a martian !

My old stomping grounds were Fairfield County. About the time I left CT bear sightings were getting more common up in the north part of the county. Are they pretty widespread now?

I run into them more on the AT in CT but this was the first in my yard. I have seen bear sign on local (Fairfield county) trails but the second encounter was my first on them. Heck there is even a local moose. When I was a kid this kinda thing didn't happen. On a side note down the road in Kent there are more rattlers than nearly anyplace I have been.
