Connecting 220V Outlet?

Okay I'm a complete nimrod when it comes to this stuff and before I plug that expensive oven in I want to make sure I hook up the outlet correctly...

I have no clue which is the "hot" line or which side of the outlet it would go to. The outlet in quesion has the ground on one side with one connection next to it and the other connection on the opposite side of the outlet.

Which line goes to which screw? The only color similar to the previous outlets is black and I don't know which side it goes on, or even if it matters. The ground is pretty clear even to me, but I've no idea how to hook up the other two leads. Help me!

Dave, wait for another post to back me up. The brass colored terminals are 110 volt (the hot if you like). There will be two of them. The lighter colored terminal is return (ground).

Roger, does it matter which side the black goes to? Or because it's alternating current does it even matter? That's how ignorant I am about this; it's embarrassing but not nearly so much as blowing up my control would be. :o :D

As long as the ground is connected to ground and the two hot leads are connected to the two hots, It dont matter.

That's just what I wanted to hear! Thanks Mark, it's all hooked up and I think I'll go plug her in before I go to work. :D

Well fellows - if we don't get any "It Worked" post,it means he never figured out that there were TWO hot leads in 220.
It is my opinion that - If you are not completely familiar with electrical wiring,GET SOMEONE TO DO IT WHO KNOWS!!! A simple mistake can be fatal.

always connect the ground first (safety)-and with 220 you have two hots, and can get shocked from either--and should you catch both it will knock your d**k in the dirt big time. if you know a "sparky", it would be a good idea to have him hook it up and check it out (wire size/breaker size/other things on the same circuit). the best advise, explaination, or "here's how i would do it" given verbally or in a note doesn't put someone qualified at the scene --- better to be safe than fried. mike

Dave, now that you've got your oven operational I would like to warn you of something I found out the hard way. I can say this about Brownell's PBC and it might apply to some other decarb prevention agents as well (but I don't know): After using PBC, say for your O1 blade as an example, do not allow any PBC remnants to contact your high temperature steels or stainless foil while at high temperature. At high temperature, higher than PBC's rating, it develops a bad case of Packman. It will eat through the foil packet and perhaps into the blade. I learned this on a S30V blade. The packet rested upon some left behind PBC and the PBC ate a patch out of the foil packet. I'd keep it from contacting the thermocouple termination too.

Good advice Roger, thanks. You anticipated my first heat treat to a T; how'd you do that? :D

Thanks for all the other good advice too. I'm not very smart but I do know to shut off the breaker before I go handling wires. ;) I was more worried about plugging in the oven and having it play July 4th all over my bench than giving myself a little (or a big) goosy.

I'm sure if my insurance agent ever saw all the wires running around my shop he'd cancel me immediately - right before his heart attack. I've got to get my shop wired properly sooner than later... I'll probably do that with the proceeds from the knife I'm about to HT.

See how this works? :D

Thanks gents,

Thanks gents,

:D sounds like my shop
I can and do all my wiring but I get in such a rush to hook things up
I never do it right :D then never get or take the time to do it right,,
I got to stop that...
Allan from Rockland, one of the new formits is coming up in the morning.
the goat paths are ready..I'll show him how not to set a shop up.. :D
