Hello
I currently have a Lansky system and although I can get my knives pretty sharp , I get frustrated with the looseness and inconstancies that the holes where the rods go through . Buying used but well maintained things like cars and trucks and other things have served me well over the years but I don't know what to look for when buying Used WE , KME and tsprof systems . Do the sharpening stones go bad ? Do some of these systems have to much give when older ? Ive done a search on used systems but can find anything . Thanks

Diamond plate stone can get worn out. It's easy to use too much pressure when you're starting out. You end up tearing the diamonds out. Other types of stones could dish out, or be loaded up and need reconditioned.
As for the sharpening systems, anything will wear with enough use, but I don't know of any parts that are prone to failing. I have a KME that I've used the crap out of and it's going strong. Can't speak to the others. They all see pretty well made though.
I started with a lansky too. Like you said, it works ok, but worth the money to upgrade if you ask me.

Kane22 , Thanks for your reply. The diamond stones are my major concern . Most of these systems make have minimal moving parts and it makes sense to be there is not much to wear out . As long as arms are not bent I thinking I’ll be ok

Maybe it would be a good idea to ID the grits you'd like or need for the WE and know how much it would cost you to replace them. Take that price into account when haggling for the WE.

My diamond stones are ten years old and still going strong. Maybe one knife per month average?

The good news is there's a ton of good aftermarket stones out there for most of the popular systems. You might want to look into the options and prices before you buy anything.
