I have been considering getting a Mountaineer I for hiking and camping, but was wondering if anyone found it to be a tad too heavy for this application.

I've got a Sable IV that's just too large in my opinion to tote in the bush, and I know there's places I could order a kydex or concealex sheath for the Mountaineer I, which is a must for the environmental conditions it will be exposed to.

First off, is it the Mountaineer I or II that's got the 4.5" blade? That's the one I'm looking for.

And secondly, I'd love to hear input from those who carry and use it regularly.

Lastly, I'd like to chime in and say thank you to the Reeves for providing exquisite customer service when I ordered a new cap and box for an older model. Your company's one-piece knives are outstanding fit-and-finish-wise, and I've been tempted for years to pick up a Sebenza.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Are you the one on the Benchmade forum? Nice to see you here! Do yourself a favor and get a Sebenza! Join us Sebenzaholics! Seriously I was a Benchmade man for years, love the 705 axis as do you. They are coming out with a new Osborne I believe. Nice little axis lock with carbon fiber scales. They want $160.00 for a pre-production model at my local knife shop. But to be honest, I have a wood inlay Sebenza and CRK has spoiled me rotten and once you have a Sebenza everything else just doesn't quite measure up. Can't help you on the fixed blade stuff because I'm a city boy and only into folders. Nice to see you here!

Welcome professor
My Mtn1 is great. 4.5" perfect size for carry and use. Perfect build quality, edge, and design. A kydex sheath is on order, altho the standard leather sheath is very well made.
I havent visited the BM forum in awhile, good to have you in the CRK bbs.

Howdy, Professor . . .
Dunno' where you get the 4.5 inch dimension for blade length. According to my measurements, the Mountaineer I has a 4.0 inch blade and the Mountaineer II blade measures 5.5 inches. I have both; and find the II a shade on the large side for daily carry. Have been carrying the Mtn I daily for about three weeks now; and it is certainly not "too heavy". Only thing I have had to allow for is the round handle . . . it tends to roll when placed on a table or workbench. The small guard stops it and I have reattached the lanyard to discourage this tendency to roll when placed on the bench.
I'm using the supplied leather sheath and find it just right. I carry the knife right rear with the tip of the sheath tucked into the right rear pocket of my jeans. It's completely out of the way yet readily available when needed. Don't like kydex . . . ymmv

Thanks again for the input. I'm not sure where I got the 4.5" dimension either. I'm definitely a BM nut considering the quality you get for the price. I'm thinking of making a move on a Sebenza after picking up a Mountaineer I. I'll let you know what happens...

Do youself a favor and get a Sebenza and a small one at that. I know that they aren't cheap but you get what you pay for. BM is OK for the price but anyone serious about knives should have a Sebenza. Most customs aren't as nice as a Seb. This is a knife that you can truly appreciate. In a word, flawless. CRK is a small company that makes fantastic knives with great customer service. I think that BM has gotten too big for the type of service that you will get from CRK. And to top it off, you can take it apart and clean and lube it! Do that with a BM and you invalidate your warranty. Trade that 705 in for a small Seb and if you really want to go to the top, get a wood inlay. With CRK you get more than you pay for.

Maybe...

Naaah.

But I probably will pick up a large Sebenza since I've always wanted one, and so that I can have something to talk about with you guys as well. BM and CR are my two favorite production companies, you know.

I think you need to do your homework. BM manufactures knives and CRK produces knives. BM cranks out thousands of knives put together by assembly line personell. CRK has maybe six employees and are 90% handmade under the close supervision of Mr. Reeve. I would recommend a small because of ease of carry. I'm not trying to start an arguement but I think that they are two different companies at different points in their respective evolution. Merry Christmas!

Scott Dog: Understood. I don't recall having disagreed with you, but understood nonetheless. Thanks again.
