what if the tip or other part is overburned? you'll never know it before your first cutting work, and it will betray you. quality control isn't good anymore, i saw knives of most famous companies (like microtech and benchmade and others) burned while factory sharpened - even worse than some simplest locksmith (fitter, mechanic, artificer? don't know the right translation) of my city does. i suppose, one should buy simple one now, and then ask someone to coat it, if he wants to know that he didn't buy piece of sh** this time, getting coated blade.

Burn what, the edge?

Most blades aren't coated on the edge. You should be able to see a burn OK on the steel.

You're wasting your time ! Most of the damage I've seen is burned then the damage removed with final grind ! And damage enough to effect performance need not reach a very visible color.
The best way to grind after HT is to use fluid to keep things cool or better yet do it by hand , wet !!!

Why in the hell would you consider another BM? You have had three and all were terrible according to your other threads on this matter, all locked btw:

Rev had some great advice for you on this subject in your last thread:

"You said you have not had good luck with Benchmade, and went on a tirade about their customer service. To the point where your ranting got your thread in Feedback closed. After all that drama why would you even buy another one if the previous experience was so devastating to you? Maybe try and rework your budget so you aren't left broke after a knife purchase. Also, keep the vulgarities out of here. It's hard to take some seriously when they are as excitable and vulgar as you have demonstrated repeatedly. Closed, again"

I could not have said it better myself. My advice to you would be buy something locally that you can handle in person and stay away from Benchmade!

BTW, I hope you cleaned that keyboard up. That would be way more of a concern for me than any knife issue. Do you know how many germs are on those things?

are you going to say this to largest companies' workers? because i, simple guy, just nobody, know these things very well, and they don't. Maybe they shouldn't grind at all? Just sell dull knives, everyone would grind his own grind, would be much better that ruined HT on 300 more dollar knife, is it?

no this my suggestion of coating can be dangerous was just because of turmoil. It goes in black too btw. i can't even imagine how many people can get betrayed by that coated version in critical moment.

Never seen one or ever one has fail me, maybe it could happen but lucky most big companies stay behind their product.

What makes you think a black blade means anything? The edge could have been burned on ANY knife and you wouldnt know it unless using it. Its not like a black blade covers up any signs of a ruined temper. And if a company did burn an edge and sent the knife you it is either going to be visible regardless of the blade finish or any discoloration would have been removed before sending it out. But it this way, what you are doing is the very definition of making a mountain out of a mole hill. And I think your worries are more due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of how these things are made rather than any real threat.

If you are so concerned about these things then don't buy a coated knife.
Considering how you replied to the other posters in this thread, it seems you already made up your mind that all coated blades are burnt. So why bother considering one? As a matter of fact why did you bother starting a thread about this to begin with?

Come to think of it, why am I bothering to post this, since it will obviously fall upon deaf ears anyway??..

At this rate, I think the guy should just give up on owning knives period.

You would never know anyways.

If it is burned the burn can be ground off and look normal again. You can only tell by how it holds an edge

A black coating is nothing to worry about.
