Considering my first ESEE

Hello

I had an ontario made RAT 7 and RTAK II for some time, and after doing a lot of research and field testing, I've come to the conclusion that these knives have just about the perfect design for the type work I need them to do.

However I always felt that the 7 was just a bit longer than what I would ideally want.

So naturally I've been looking at the ESEE RC-6.

Now I know that the new Rowen ESEE knives are of a higher quality than Ontario's, but how do the RAT 7 and RC-6 measure up side by side size wise?

I've been browsing in these forums for a few days now and haven't found a side by side of the two.

Does anybody have these two models or perhaps a side by side picture?

Thanx

Thank You

That's exactly what I was searching for.

Don't know how I missed it...I could have sworn I had read that post.

no worries - glad to help.
seriously - if you're looking for a smaller companion to the RTAK II, look at the Izula, ESEE3, & ESEE4. The 3 has a 1/8" thick blade which makes it a great slicer, the 4 is 3/16" thick and a perfect size for most camp chores. The Izula is near weightless and drops into a pocket nicely.

I think the only difference dimentionally is that the RAT-7 had the 7inch blade while the Esee-6 has a 6.75", or 6.5" blade.

I'm not really looking for a companion to the RTAK II; I traded my RTAK for another knife a while ago.

I traded many outdoor survival type knives in the 4" ~ 10" range after using them for a while, until I finally decided which ones performed better for me.

Now I'm regretting the decision to trade what turned out to be one of my favorite knives...

I knew it when I used them, but still, wanted to see & use what was "out there" as part of a learning experience.

I know that the 'one knife to do it all' thing, isn't necessarily a good idea for some people; but that RAT 7 really did it all for me, and quite well too!
In fact; the more I used it, the better it performed; practice+good design I guess.
That's why after hearing so many great things from the Rowen made ESEE knives and the people behind the company, I'm even more eager to get one.

If I gained anything from using so many knives, it was that sort of 'instinct' to immediately recognize what designs work and which don't. Some knives felt like they didn't even want to be picked up; yet others just connected on to the hand like THE missing limb being finally reattached.

As for the IZULA, I do plan on getting one eventually, but for now I've kept my Becker BK-11 because of the larger blade as my small fixed blade. There have been a few threads of a Becker/ESEE ~ IZULA/Necker collaboration that I believe is scheduled to be made that looks pretty interesting to me as a small knife as well.

I'm very eager to get my hands on the Becker/ESEE collaboration knife as well.
If you're looking for a knife as similar as possible to your RAT-7, the ESEE6 is quite close. The differences are minor adjustments/improvements to the design by Jeff Randall - who also designed the RAT-7 & RTAK.
I picked up one a few weeks ago and am fairly impressed with its capabilities.
good luck - I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I'm not trying to derail the thread but could you provide me a link about this? I searched on google and went about 10 pages back but couldn't find any threads pertaining to a Becker and ESEE collaboration

Tough to say... I believe this picture is of one, from maybe a handful of prototypes made.

Just speculating based on the appearance of the picture next to the sheath, which looks exactly like the stock BK 11 sheath. It seems to be a bigger handle than that of the production IZULA to accommodate the larger blade.
