considering this 2x72 on ebay for first grinder

I'd pass. That machine seems very under built. Two things that immediately stand out to me is that there is not a power switch for the motor (he doesn't list the speed either), and the "tool arm" if you can call it that, is tightened in place with a 10 cent bolt, as opposed to an actual knob or handle. If the maker can't be bothered to invest another $15 to $20 for some VERY basic necessities such as an on/off switch and a tightening knob, I don't think I want that machine.

Will it spin a belt? I'm sure it will. Is it worth over $700? Not even close, IMO. You could build the same machine yourself for about half the asking price. Upgrade to 1.5" square tube, and spend the other $350 you saved on a VFD setup, and you might have a halfway decent grinder.

Also, I'd love to know exactly what part of that machine the maker has a patent on. That number doesn't return any results as far as I can see.

That looks like a POS

Go to polar bear forge and look at the grinder in the box . You can assemble yourself and buy your contact wheels on line cheaper then ever

I agree with building but also time is money.

I went this route after building a few different grinders as well as using almost all of the name brand ones.

For the money I think it's the best grinder out and under priced given his thought and work on them has a cam over gas sock, direct drive, three arm tooling slot. His aluminum wheels are also better balanced and nicer machined then any I have used short of vwjackstraw on ebay.

Adjustable work rest, adjustable platen, stainless or alum or powder coated.

5 other makers have purchased similar after getting to use mine. He offers a few different styles all use the cam over gas shock tension tracking setup and what swayed me originally but his workmanship and customer service where all gravy after. Everything is lined up and threaded straight unlike kmg as of late.

Also made in South Dakota not China

T Tin.Man that is a great deal and looks well made.

Never saw that before would make a nice horizontal grinder

thank you gentlemen, I appreciate your honest opinions and tips in the right direction.

Ideally get a 1hp 1725 rpm motor
Kbac24d vfd

Both from electric motor wholesale. Make sure the motor is 56c face motor

Spend a little extra and get the kbac-27d. It will run a 1.5hp at 110vac, or 2hp at 220vac. 1hp will get the job done, but you'll soon be wanting more power, and it's not that much extra to jump up to the next (and much better) size.

And I agree, you definitely don't want single speed.

Agree on the kbac-27d VFD. I have one on my 2x72 and love it. There times you need lower speeds to have more control of stock removal. 3 HP is nice, but a 2 HP will remove stock, just a little slower.

You will NEVER regret going VS with a VFD and having a 1.5HP 3 Phase motor. They can be bought as a package or separately.

I hope this hobby works for you, but not every new maker sticks with it. If you go VS, you can sell the grinder easily for close to what you paid for it. If it is just a single speed, you will be lucky to get half.

I purchased one of Kyle's grinders based on T Tin.Man 's advice and I'm loving it so far. Kyle is a great guy, super responsive and has the ability to make some modifications if need be. The only thing to know is that with his flat platen, you can't insert a tool arm into the lowest socket, which may be a non issue for you. He's already identified the issue and is working on a revised platen. Belt changes and tracking adjustments are insanely quick and easy, I don't think you can get much better than this for the price.
