Contact wheel diameter

I enjoy making small fixed blades(2.5" to about 4") but would like to try using a smaller diameter wheel(I am currently using a smooth 14" on my BaderII). I would like to keep the blades thicker near the spine. Should I get a smooth 8", 6" or 10"?

Thanks for the help.

I saw a thread here withing the last few days someone was asking about damaged wheels. One of the replies placed a link to a company that would re rubber the wheel.

I'm sure it is posible 8 and 10 inch wheels are pretty standard. However if you are making narrow blades. A company in australia use a wheel only 3 or 4 inches. On a narrow small blade it makes the hollow look more obvious. The tool here is called I think, A multi tool and fits onto a standard 1.5 hp bench grinder.

Good luck happy grinding

Just incase you had not thought of it changing the wheel size will change the length of the belt required. Or you will need to adjust the center point of the wheel with a bracket of some kind.

The Australian DJ grinder no longer in manufacture had a set of bolt on extentions to allow the wheel size to be changed quickly. One attachement even uses a needle bearing and a contact wheel about 5/5 for making finger groves and other tight corners.

Depending on how wide your blades are from the edge to the spline, an 8" or 10" should work fine. I use a 10" by 1" wide and really like it, but also use an 8" for even smaller blades.
