I just got a new 8" wheel for my Burr King ,what a pain in the ass to crown ( condition for grinding) I spent half of the day radiusing the corners a little at a time and crowning slightly untill I got it to work just right.
It occured to me that there are probably a lot of guys/gals out there that have never done that to there wheels. I know there has to be a better way than my way. do any of you knifemakers have a better way? my lathe is much to small so I just use a coarse file directly on my wheel Radiusing the corners approx 1/8" and ever so slightly v the face.

I have never intentionally shaped a contact wheel unless it was damaged. In those cases I would nail a large piece of 36 grit sandpaper to a thick piece of plywood and used that to get the face as flat as possible. It works well.

I depend on the crown on my belt tracking wheel to control the belt and leave the contact wheel flat.
