Can anyone recommend a source for a contact wheel? My grinder has a flat platten and I would like to add an 8" or 10" contact wheel.

Thanks
Mark

I have the 10" Grizzly wheel - it does not come with the bearings, so you will have to have it machined out and the bearings pressed in.

I see some contact wheels that are just a solid surface and a few others that are serrated surface. Is there an advantage of one over the other?

Also, I saw a guy on another site who used an 8" caster wheel for his contact wheel. I may be using the wrong terms here for the wheel that you do hollow grinding with. But is that a possibility?

I am just beginning to look around at acquiring a grinder but I am cheap and have a hard time buying something I can make. As I look at what is needed to to make a grinder I see that the most expensive component is the wheels and motor. I have a couple motors around so I am down to sourcing affordable wheels in the next few months.

I highly recommend usaknifemakerssupply as posted above. They have some of the best prices and customer service around. The contact wheels they sell are actually made by sunray if I'm not mistaken

The serrated surface contact wheels remove metal faster and aren't quite as good at final finishing. With modern ceramic belts you will be fine with a smooth wheel for starters, I'd leave the serrated for a second purchase when you really ramp up production.
I've seen contact wheel made of wood, so anything go's.

A 90 Durameter smooth rubber contact wheel in the size you want will do what you need and last many years
