I haven't taken the plunge completely on making knives as I don't have a belt grinder. I am thinking of building my own. I like the challenge of making my own tools. Any way, I was wondering what size contact wheel I should put on the grinder? And, where do you get the contact wheels? They appear to be very expensive and I am not sure which one to get, wheather it is serrated or flat, hardness, etc... I have read on several sources on the internet that the 10" is the most versitile, is this true?

Hey make your own grinder worked for me lots of info out there on homemade grinders as for contact wheels my grinder has cast aluminum casters as wheels I just cut the rudder or urathane stuff off them and trued them up by putting them on a motor and using 60 grit on them(poor mans lathe). One wheel is wood. lots of hardware stores have bearings to put in the casters to replace the bearings that come in them. check out this link near the bottom of the page is a section on grinders that may answer most of your questionshttp://gbrannon.bizhat.com/#links
and check out this thread it has pics of my grinder for ideas.http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384789
Good luck, Ken

I use a 10" for most things, but do use an 8" for the hollow grind on the tangs for tapering as well as the top edge on many knives as it rides in the smaller bevel easier.
I've also used a 5-6" for that, but rarely.

I'd say 10". I use NON serrated as I prefer a better finish than a wheel be micro seconds faster in hogging off material, something I have no trouble at all in doing with solid wheels.
I also don't like the additional vibration and noise of the serrated wheels.

Edited to add: You can get them from this guy too, but I have a feeling you would be better off as it's your first attempt, to deal locally(USA) just for ease of contact, like the phone, etc.

Does anyone know if the Reitvelt wheels can be directly attached to the KMG without modification? I'm looking for a 10" and 8", but I'm concerned that I'll have to do some alteration to get things in working order.
