I am always looking for a new contaier, thanks.
From the little research I have done the best containers seem to be found in Europe.
The most interesting anyway. Lately I have seen a sm. 4x6(?)5x8(?) mess tin with a fitted top and folding handle. it does not look like the heavy ones found in U.S. surplus stores. The problem is shipping. by the time I get one here it will cost $$$
it should be Gold Plated. This was seen
at the SASS web site.
At penrith they have what looks like a pan
of close to the same size with a locking top
the type found on MSR stowaway pots.I am hoping that I can find out if it is available
in the U.S.,shipping costs again. anyone have any ideas how to cut the costs?

Hi Frediver,

I used to have French Survival ration aluminium tins size size 7 3/8" by 3 3/8" by 1 3/8" (external size) that I bought a bunch of in Paris.
If you're interested I might be able to get some more.
These where 1964 model French Navy Survival rations tins that contained Vitamin C tablets sea sickness tablets and some food.
These cans are Military grade so very strong.
Sending them over to the US would cost for 3-5 cans/tins approx. $10-15 and the cans themselves $8 a piece this works out to about $10 a piece.
This only if they still sell them in Paris (France)

Take a look at them in my Survival folder way down:

I am using the plastic containers that cutting tools come in

they are lightweihgt plastic, and telescopic!

chaeck with your local metal manufacturing places they usually throw them out!

BAGHEERA, Thanks a million for your photos and explainations, they are a great help to me as I have been trying to figure out just how much stuff to put in my Brigade Quartermasters Photo Journalis Jacket I just got a few weeks ago. How heavy is your vest after putting all of the things in it (lbs. please)? What kind of "scouting" are you refering to in your signature...Boy Scouting, etc.?
If you have anymore of your good ideas PLEASE put them on the forums....well done!

P.S. I just hope he met to spell his profession that way- Systems-analist / biologist. Bagheera, if you did not mean to be humorous, in English, it should be spelled "analyst." If he did mean to spell it that way, he has been reading the Hoodlum forum too much.

Hi Muzzleup and Donald,

Thanks for the compliments
smile.gif
first of al Donald I think I made a typo with my profession as I have not read Hoodlums forum to much and I think you refer to analist in a bit brownish way
wink.gif
like 'anal-ist' perhaps ? well I'll correct it as soon as I have time it should be analyst, thanks for the info.

Muzzleup, my vest weighs loaded with all the goodies about 3 pounds including the vest itself.
It's a polycotton very lightweight material that it's made of with a net lining inside.
The only drawback it has that because of the weight and the absence of a padding "around the neck" that it sometimes "cuts" into the back of your neck.
I've read about several manufacturers that use a padding material around the neck and on the shoulder to counteract the weight.

Also the weight can increase by about 1 to 1.5 pounds depending on extra's that I put in the vest but then it starts to get uncomfortable on my neck.

I also bought on ebay an Pilot's survival vest (SRU21) and put all the pouches on myself and this vest wears very nice. The only problem is that my wife doesn't like to walk beside me when I wear it and I have to agree it's not a normal day carry always vest.

Muzzleup, any questions I'm glad to try to answer them.

Oh yes, I'm involved in Boy Scouting

Take care,

Donald.

*P.S. the above was an allusion to his ferrocerium rods. If you consider the prose poor, you still got your money's worth.

I think the boxes Bagheera mentions are sold by Major Surplus here in the US. I got a six-pack of them a year or so ago for around $10 or so. Can't remember.. (gettin old I guess) As he says, they are heavy aluminum, and can hold a lot. They fit well into vest pockets, and are easily sealed with duct tape, as the lid is a slip fit.

Hi ThatMguy,

I have been looking for the cans on the website of the company you mentioned but I haven't found them they seem to sell "Swedish" aluminium containers but those have a hinged lid.
If the cans are exactly the same as the ones I had I would want 6 of them for the $10 as this is way below the price that I could get them from a very large major surplus dealer in France. And I can tell you I did some negotiating with that guy in my best French to bring the price down!

but he was not inclined to do that.

I refered another BF member to the website and he did some checking and came back to me telling me that the cans are not the ones that I used to have.

So if they are please point me to the correct page as I'm also interested.

I will pass on the French tins though.
Thanks again,Frediver<><

What is this about your ferrocium rods? I have been looking for a source of these rods in long lengths as from the maker but have not been able to locate a maker to buy from. I already have the Strike Force, and BlastMatch but would like to make some of my own in longer lengths to carry in a 4" Lahti.

Help me if you can.
