Recently picked this up, had the Contego before, the G10 on the previous versions were very very grippy, while this new blue/black version has a smooth, not quite but almost polished feel to it, so much so that I think I might screw in a couple screws on the otherside where the clip would mount, just to get some traction to pull it from the pocket. Especially since they don't include a lanyard hole on these models, nor the previous rendition either.

But on the previous model, they did have a glass breaker at the end of the handle, while these models do not. SO, I was thinking of asking a favour of a friend at work to see if he could drill out the end so that it leaves a small bridge of metal to wrap some paracord around, I think there should be just enough room.

Otherwise, the knife is very nice, Axis lock same o, same o, very smooth and solid lockup. Blade arrived actually less than sharp as the previous models, not sure but was a little surprised but some time on the stones and she's good to go.

Here are a few photos of the latest visitor at my house ;)

Nice deep carry pocket clip, it's tension is not too tight so I'll carefully bend that down a little bit.

Here's a shot of the back spacer, the angles there I think would be a handy place to drill out on both sides to meet in the middle, just missing the mounting screw, so you'd have a small bar for the paracord to slip around. OR just mill out the end, leaving metal top and bottom and then drill a hole and insert a small steel rod for the lanyard to wrap around.

All in all, Knifeworks does a nice job bringing these exclusives to our doorsteps, they shipped quickly and at the time I ordered this, they also included a nice tool set from BM too, very handy!

Here's a link to their site for this particular knife Benchmade 810 in M390

edited to add, I'm in no way connected with Knifeworks, nor am I married to any of the bosses family or am I a long lost child, just a knife knut like the rest of you guys and gals ;)

No, I'm not a glass breaker fan either, but I'm a BIG lanyard fan and so on this one NOT having the glass breaker works in my favour :)

Great photos, as usual, Gary.
I love the M4 Contego and have an M390 one on the way for a stainless option. Hope it is delivered today after it seems to have taken a tour de USA from its start in La more than a week ago (usps tracking shows it going to California, then MN, apparently by bike courier... :)

Thanks guys, just had the holes I envisioned in my head, no jokes now, and a friend at work was able to put them in the end of that back spacer for me, they could have been just a tad larger but beggars can't be too choosy :) I'll post up some photos in a while,

Here's some quick shots taken tonight, first up is a shot of the two holes I asked him to put in the back spacer, could stand to be just a little bit bigger to help make it easier to get the paracord through, as it was, I had to slip a small string through first, then tie that onto the paracord and pull the paracord through, I had to remove the inner strands at the start in order to get the paracord through and then PULLED it the rest of the way through. Before doing that, I slit some very narrow strips of sand paper to smooth the inside middle area so it wouldn't be too sharp on the paracord.

It worked out very nice, now I can hook my pinky around the diamond knot to retrieve the knife from my pocket, or drop the knife into my pocket and have the end diamond knot just in reach, or tucked into my watch pocket so prying eyes don't see a pocket clip but I can still get to it without much trouble ;)

and a closeup of where the paracord goesinta and goesoutta

I think that would be something that Benchmade might want to think about doing on some knives where they don't have the real estate to include a lanyard hole.

Gary that looks amazing and very creative. I have to admit...you had me nervous by drilling into your new knife. It looks amazing. Well done.

Thanks but the honor goes to the machinist where I work, I owe him something for his troubles, he's not open to do more of these so this was just an idea to share, you guys and gals will need to find your own machinist hobbit to help out ;)

But I will take credit for the idea :) always thinking of new things, sometimes it works out, sometimes not so much :(

It would be cool if Benchmade worked this in on their knives I think, probably something less expensive would be to mill out the slot and leave a spot for a pin to fit down in to use as a lanyard post but still protect the lanyard from the knife's edge.

Great Contego! I just got mine last week and I love it. I am having a hard time deciding which to carry, this one or my Emersons. lol

Here is a video I took in slow mow to show just how heavy this blade is and you can open it just with the flick of the wrist.

Neat vid sound there!

Hi G2.

Wonderful presentation and photos as always.

I too am fan of lanyard, and not too happy about some of the models not having a hole for it. As you mentioned, Contego is the biggest "offender" in my book as well. 94x could have one, and 300, 484, 707, Infidel..

I like your solution for 810-1401. I was thinking of drilling through, but wasn't too keen on after treatment / deburr.

I hate to admit this but this 810 is my favorite, even replacing the 710 as edc.
I keep looking for a lanyard hole on it though.

Thanks guys, I think that worked out pretty well, the cleaning or deburring was super easy, I clamped the back spacer up so it had the two holes facing me and slipped a thin strip of sand paper down the hole and out the other side, then I just pulled back and forth to get it to sand down the peak that the two holes created, it was very easy to do. The harder part would be drilling the holes, my friend took care of that part and left the clean up for me to handle.
