Is the g10 on the knifeworks exclusive the same aggressiveness as the production model?

Thanks for your insight!

I'll go further to say there are no checker on 810-1401.

(Yeah, I have swapped the blade) Notice that 810-1401 does not have checkering. It is all smooth.

Oh, aright. I have the black & blue one; and wanted to try out M4 steel. I suppose I could always sand the scales down on the regular one if need be.

Ah, the standard version is fine.(standard version, giant slab of M4, Osborne design, under $200. Fkn awesome) And the M4 is tougher anyway, like the men who use it.

.

Of coarse..., I do it like this, as to not damage my pretty hands.

^^^ lol

I've handled both, and neither are "slick". I prefer a lightly-sanded M4 version.

I like the M390 steel. Both are great knives. M4 version is more aggressive. The M4 has a glass breaker on the opposite end. Some like the glass breaker and some hate it.

I did not mind the stock M4 scales but I did lightly sand them and it made a difference. I like the knife and would not have moved it had I not sanded it but there is a difference.
Frank.

I just got the KW one in and its a brute of a knife for sure. My first Contego so I am absorbing a lot at once. I was surprised at how smooth the scales are. I'm not normally a fan of smooth scales so that is a bit of a con in my eyes. Although ironically there have been a lot of negative comments about how rough the standard scales are. I just like scales that glom to my hands. That said they are very appealing to the eye, mine are more blue than black. It would actually have been great if they'd just used plain blue G-10 scales IMO. The only prob with smooth scales is that the clip has nothing to grab onto when its in your pocket and when the knife is heavy it can go sliding out quite easily. I might have to look at improving the retention a bit on this clip, or putting another on it, which would be a shame, given its such a cool clip.

The blade is a thing of beauty, love the finish and the edge is razzzzor sharp. I can tell its going to be a phenomenal cutter.

All in all a great knife, BUT I would have preferred a more traditional G-10 finish, didn't realise the scales would be quite as smooth as that.

How do the blade coatings hold up? I have had some issues with BM D2 and rust spots, and would want to have that issue with the M4.

I haven't had any issues with my M4 Contego. Then again, I've not had problems with a LE uncoated D2 BM943. Carrying it IWB during runs, if I didn't rinse my sweat off it afterwards, some rust spots would show up. But that's about the only way, for me. So just saying, maybe my input on M4 isn't a good datapoint.

So far I really like it with one BUT.... the combo of a satin finish clip and a smooth scale, on a heavy knife, means retention is very poor. Not sure how to solve this one. I might need to get a clip made that is going to grab the material more. Its a pity they couldnt have left the G-10 texture in place when they made these scales. They look nice, but a grabby surface is one of the best features of G-10.

Anybody have a recommendation for a custom clip maker?

That's the only thing I'd like to change about that knife. I hear people complain that the texturing of the original was too aggressive but I'd rather have it that way and sand it to my liking if I must. Mine feels just a little smoother than I'd like. Also there's no lanyard hole to rig something up for retention though I may rig something up using the unused clip holes. Haven't really decided what I want to do with it yet, if anything. It really is a fantastic knife. As for the sharpness out of the box, you are not kidding. I'm glad I did the shaving test on my leg instead of arm as one swoop took out an enormous patch of hair off my thigh and left nothing there. Nothing, like I took shaving cream and a 5 blade Gillette to my leg. This thing is SHARP.
