contemplating a design

Hey All,

I posted a similar thread in the JK forum, but I thought I would run this by you guys, too.

For a while now - ever since pitdog posted a 'let's see some crazy designs' thread - I have been contemplating a custom JK (Stomper) hiking knife with a wide blade, pleasing lines, and a (gasp!) combo grind. Now, I have never seen a knife with a grind quite like this. The closest one out there would have to be the Mora 2000, which I think is an effective proof of concept.

Here's my latest sketch: (I'm thinking of calling it the Kolapore Hiker or the Metcalfe Hiker, in honour of two of my favourite spots on the Bruce Trail - or possible the Bonbe Hiker, just to give a shout out to the W&SS chat regulars)

The OAL is about 10.5", and the blade (tip to the closest point on the handle scales) would be about 5.5". Max height is about 2". I'm thinking that 3/8 stock would work.

The 2" of the blade closest to the handle would be scandi ground, with the area above being left flat (and rough finished!). After 2", the blade would transition to John's usual grind. As you can see, the midline of the knife travels from end to end, down the centre of the handle, which would give it a useful point that still has a bit of belly.

I like to use a scandi for making fuzz sticks, cutting notches, and other fine woodworking tasks, but I like a convex or flat grind for food prep, light chopping, and general cutting. This model would give me a bit of both in the same package. Now, there are those who will argue that I should just carry two knives, so as not to compromise the features of either. I agree - this is a good approach, and it is the one I have used for years. But, dammit, I want a combo-ground scandi.

So, what do you guys think? Sound interesting? Utter madness?

All the best,

- Mike

I really like the overall shape of the knife. I'll take mine with a scandi grind to the tip please.

Thanks gents,

hlee, in truth, I think that a full scandi would be just as - perhaps even more - useful. But the result would just be another variation on the Nessmuk design. I sort of have my heart set on a hybrid. I have plenty of nice, functional knives - now I want a mutant ;)

Best,

- Mike

Bonbe, bro.

Looks good, and I am having a combo grind made at the moment as well.

Very nice

Definitely interesting. I might just take the scandi all the way if you please. Also, something to note. You might consider (since you're already off the map) an asymmetrical grind. Make one side convex and the other side a scandi grind. I'm not sure that combo has been done but asymmetrical has been done with pretty reasonable success. Just a thought. Either way, she'll be your design which will feel great!

sorry Mentor, but did you say 3/8" stock???? I like big beefy blades but dang..........thats BEEFY > ......

Yeah, pitdog just pointed that out to me. I meant 3/16". Might as well try to put a scandi grind on a brick, eh? :D

Thanks for catching that!

My old Busse Basics are pretty close to that: Convex edge on one side and a flat-ground edge on the other. They perform pretty well---especially the 9" chopper.

I think it looks great, has a great flow to it. I'd love to hear how the different grinds work out for you.

I didn't get on too well with my 2000 for other reasons so can't say much about the usefulness of dual grinds on such a small knife, but perhaps a dual grind would be a little over-designed for me if that makes sense?
