Contemplating my first Sebenza...could use some suggestions

I am fairly new to "quality" knives. For years i have never gone anywhere without a knife clipped to my left pant pocket. I currently either carry a Spyderco Endura or my Benchmade 730, i bought the bechmade because i loved the feel and look of the carbon fiber black handle and black blade, i also liked the fact that it had the M2HS steel. I have since discovered that the blade on the 730 just doesn't work as well as my Endura and i have grown to hate the B2 blade coating, it just doesn't perform like i had hoped "live and learn right?". I like my Spyderco, but there is just too much movement in the blade side to side and up and down. the other spydies i owm after time have developed the same problem. Ive come to the conclusion that a truly high quality knife is what i want and need.

After alot of reading about knives and surfing around on this site i have decided that the Sebenza sounds like the knife for me.

Here is what i would like to get based on what i have read. My second choice would be a large left handed regular woodie "wood type undecided" with double thumb studs and swedge. My First choice would be a large left handed classic with the duel thumb lugs, and some type of unique graphic. I know CRK does alot of unique graphic design's on their sebenzas but don't know if it is possible to order a knife with a graphic design of your own request. I have two twin infant girls that i call my lady bugs, and would LOVE to have a Sebenza with two lady bugs on it...on a vine or something. Either that or i have seen some with Damsel Flies on them, that would be cool too. Does CRK do any custom work like that?

I am familiar with custom firearms, but not knives. I know custom work takes time and money....but i am very aware that you do get what you pay for. Does CRK do this type of work? any suggestions on my picks and requests would be appreciated....i just want to be well informed when i call CRK and ask them if they can do what i want.

thanks in advance....sorry for the long post.

I think the Sebenza is the way to go. You can't go wrong with it. I would call about the design. I know that sometimes Lisa does custom handle designs by request. Maybe if you send her a sketch of what you'd like she'll be able to help. It's best to work out the details with CRK though. Good luck. I'm sure you'll be pleased no matter what sebenza you get. If you get a custom graphic maybe you can post a picture of it. I know there are plenty of forumites besides me that like looking at pics of Sebenzas.

IMO, get the wood inlay and save yourself time and money.

You will love it. :)

It just feels better in your hand.

I don't think you can specify the wood, but you can ask for light or dark.

fuzzysoxs, welcome! I think it's a terriffic idea to have Lisa at CR knives do a custom design for your first Sebenza. You can always get the wood, and probably will some day. Give them a call, they will be pleased to do it for you. Good luck!:)

I don't know if you have called yet but if not, please go ahead and contact us. We'd love to do something for you - lady bugs is a great idea and just the kind of challenge Lisa loves!

Good choice on a Sebenza, of course you would expect that response on the CRK forum but I strongly believe it to be a true statement :)

One word on Swedges, personally I find them to be nice to look at, but to me impractical in use, as sometimes when you want to do some fine cutting using just the tip of the knife, I often guide the blade with my other thumb on the back of the tip pushing the blade into the material and with a Swedge ground in, if it comes together in almost an edge, it can be a literal pain in your thumb, just my view on the Swedge deal...I almost bought a nice small fixed blade a fellow from Freeport Maine made but it's swedge was the one thing that put me off from taking that knife...as it would lightly dig into my thumb when I was whittling with it and pushing against the back side of the blade.

oh..and I agree with RGRAY...go for the Wood! :D
although a truly customized work by Lisa would certainly be keen!

The wood inlays are undeniably nice but the ladybug one would be truly unique and it would have special meaning to you. Lisa does some fine work.

My sentiments exactly, and the reason why I have a "unique" w/pearl inlay. BTW, my daughter loves it :D

Hey Cutiger 3,
How did you get MOP inlays? And do you have a pics? I'd love to see them.

Thanks,

Jason

Just ask the great team at CRK and they will sort it!

A little while ago I wanted to buy a UG small Damascus Sebi, however there was a break down in comms with the company I was buying it from (it was already set aside for me and then accidently sold from under me, mistakes happen) I was heartbroken:( .

Well thanks to jki, Arizona Knives and Chris Reeve Knives, the problem was sorted in record time!

I bought a small dark Walnut Sebi with a BG-42 blade and it was sent to CRK to have the Double High Carbon Spiral Damascus blade fitted.

The whole thing took about 6 weeks to happen! Amazing how everyone really worked hard on my behalf.

What can I say? I made some great friends and got an amazing knife!

Thats what this place is like, cool people and one of the many reasons why I really rate CRK. Above and beyond is NORMAL for these people, who can ask for more? Not me.

Cheers.

A Sebenza is the way to go. Now the question is...What will you choose for your second one?

The MOP inlay would be something like this one - just chose this picture cause it's a pretty knife - Umfaan with Unique Graphic and colored Zebra Mosaic Damascus!

As all the others have said... you cant go wrong with a Sebenza regardless of your flavor.
Over the past ten years or so I've managed to spend thousands on many different folders, usually just to see if I liked them.
Then I finally bought a Sebenza... now all of my other knives are sitting in a fire safe and I rarely look seriously at any other knives as a potential purchase.
It sort of ruined my "hobby"! :)

Thanks for the picture Anne, it's beautiful. What kind of damascus is that? I really like it.

Thanks again,

Jason

Never mind. Forgive my stupidity, I should have read the post instead of going gaga for the pic.
