This is the RAT family PSK. I like my gear to look very normal from the outside, which is why I never carry my gear in a Maxpedition or anything like that unless I'm deep deep in the woods. Around in the daily life, it just looks like a laptop or something. This is the serious PSK bag. I have another one that is a little smaller that is my daily go to work bag, but this is my weekend and going on trips bag. The most noted thing about it... it was put together by RAT Packers. Best group of people in the world. This pack does get used quite a lot and the items that get used get replaced immediately, especially the sanitizing items. I like BBQ. ;)

For more pictures of the contents, see THIS THREAD.

  • a bic lighter wrapped in sillyfane
  • another small pill bottle
  • a Trekker OHT
    which has a p-38 attached
  • some glucose tablets and some candy
  • a few good teabags

the compass with whistle that I always carry in my jacket and my keys, which has a small prybar and compass/thermometer on it.

Ok, here is mine, funny had started to work this out right before the contest was announced...

This is a Maxpedition Waistepack, can't remember which model. Everything fits in here, with a tiny bit of room to spare.

The way this pack works you can run your belt through it with the Izula there and it carries just fine.

Mine is built from the NRA Survival Kit.

RATPSK_01.jpg

RATPSK_02.jpg

Not necessarily the most elegant solution but one that allows me to carry my Izula inside the PSK. I can attach the sheath to the lanyard on the box. With a little pushing and pulling I might even be able to squeeze it inside but space is kind of at a premium. :D

RATPSK_03.jpg

RATPSK_04.jpg

Izula with orange paracord
Fishing kit, needles, safety pins, and glow sticks taped into bottom of case
Heavy Duty foil
10 Katadyn MP-1 tabs to purify water
StarFlash signal mirror
Fishing line and snare wire
Sewing kit
Scroll saw blade
BlastMatch
Mini Bic
2 X WetFire Tinder
Whistle
Bandaids
Ceramic sharpening rod

I have two of these kits built up so I can use one and keep one ready to go. The other one doesn't (yet) have a RAT inside because I didn't realize that the Izula would fit so nicely. :D

I actually hate entering contests about my PSK, I never win, and because someone always comes along and says "Geee dude... why do you carry so much crap?" The true of the matter is that my PSK is also my ARES/CERT go bag, as well as my get home bag. I have used it at a number of accidents, as my 24 hour bag for CERT, I have carried it while assisting in a SARs operation, and I have actually tested it getting home from work (26 mile walk). I realize I tend to be blade heavy, but the kit works and works well. It is with me or within arms reach 24/7, I have one of these in each car, one in my office desk draw.

I looked at a number of carry all bags, and settled on the Maxpedition Typhoon, liking the monostrap style more then a backpack style. The Rat blades shown in the pictures stay out of sight unless I am off pavement. The izula is on my strap, and the RC-3p rides on the side. Sorry for the crappy photos, my digital camera has devoloped issues. :(

Here is my kit. I debated hauling it all out for photos, but I would REALLY like that lighter. This is a kit that I carry everywhere. On the highway, in the bush, urban etc. It has a mix of urban and wilderness components. More of a get home/possibles bag than a PSK. It has certain elements that I swap out for the season. I.e. not much need for a bug net in January when it's -40:D Sorry about the pics. I tried to fit most of it in, but ended up describing the bigger stuff of it.

The kit is carried in my North Face daypack. This pack has been with me everywhere, land, sea and air (hey just like G.I. Joe!!). The pack has room for a 2.5L hydration pouch and allows me to carry everything for long distances while "blending in".

IMG_0903.jpg

In the top pouch ( no photos) I have:

1 Bandanna
2 N95 face masks
Coin pouch
Hand sanitizer
notebook and space pen
Silva Ranger compass
4x Wet Ones

In the main pocket I have (not all shown in pictures):

1 windshirt
1 North face microfleece shirt (fall/winter/spring)
1 Woolly hat (fall/winter/spring)
1 pair wool socks
1 neck warmer (fall/winter/spring)
1 pair leather gloves
1 wide brim "boonie" hat w/bug net stashed inside (summer)
2 big orange trash bags
50' 550 cord
1 Hackey sack (for fun:p)
1 small roll electrical tape
1 roll-up 2L water bag
1 1L Nalgene with nesting stainless cup
1 small first aid kit
1 Tikka headlamp w/spare batteries
1 Leatherman Wave
1 half-roll TP w/nitrile gloves

IMG_0899.jpg

IMG_0901.jpg

In one small bag I have:

1 emergency bivy sack
2 Clif bars
Assorted tea, sugar, water purification tablets

IMG_0898.jpg

In the other small bag I have:

Match case w/large needle
dental floss
Titanium spork
duct tape
hydration salts
magnifier
pull through sharpener
2 AA batteries ( for camera when I carry it)
Pain relief
small roll flagging tape
Sharpie marker

IMG_0897.jpg

To this I will usually add either my Izula or my RC-3, depending on what I am doing. I carry my Rc-3 baldric style so I have a nylon belt with a quick release for that. Also comes in handy in case I forget my belt. The whole pack is easy to carry and I can honestly say I have used just about everything in it (except the bivy sack). Anyway, thanks for (hopefully) reading this far. Any suggestions on how to improve it, let me know. Did I mention how much I like that lighter . . . . :D

OK here is my entry... first a few things about me and my "philosophy of survival".
This is my EDC (every day carry) within the EDC is the PSK (personal survival kit)
Whats the difference? EDC is every day carry and every day use.
PSK is used ONLY for a survival situation, that way no resources are in any way decremented at a time when Im depending on them.
Also if you dont carry the PSK as EDC then how do you know you will have it when you need it? I carry this everyday, everywhere.

So to start...
The bag is a Jumbo Maxpedition with a Janus extension (this is the PSK)
I also have a sheath for my multi-tool and a carry handle.
The carry handle is 25 ft of braided paracord attached using two Maxped KeyKeepers.
edcpsk003.jpg

in the top pocket of the flap I have some everyday tools...
a stopwatch, a CRKT sidehog, my tool keyring which has:
starting from the Leatherman micro going clockwise to
eyeglasses screwdriver
split pea lighter
flints
bison cylinder with a glass vial for meds
craftsman screwdriver
titanium screwdriver / bottle opener
DMT KatchKey fish hook sharpener

under the main flap...
organizer with "Rite in the Rain" notebook
an assortment of pens, flashlight
Windows 2000 commands book
RAT firesteel

main compartment...
pair of socks,vaccuum packed
bandana vaccuum packed these are stacked and placed in the bottom
gerber knife sharpener
handwarmers
check book in Alok Sak hidden in inner pocket
Mad Croc caffeinated gum
Altoid mini mints
pack of Krazy Glue (four single use tubes)
tube vault has a USB drive with personal stuff, plastic green tube with $100 in $20s
zippered pouch has a USB cord and 7 USB drives (work stuff)
Corsair Survivor (USB drive with Important Documents, my identity bugout kit) Secured, encrypted, with hidden partitions
Grooming kit: finger nail and toenail clippers, tweezers, diamond file.
eyeglasses kit with cleaner, parts and tools.
fishing and snare kit (wont fit in PSK pouch)
asthma rescue inhaler (epinephrine)
(not pictured) emergency poncho
edcpsk016.jpg

side pocket has a First Aid Kit
bandaids, tape, roll gauze, disinfectant, Motrin, Benadryl, etc
Emergency Field Dressing

back pocket (holster area)
Aquamira Frontier Filter (wont fit in PSK pouch)
two Millenium bars (emergency rations, wont fit in PSK pouch)
AQUA-POUCH™ PLUS water treatment system and canteen (wont fit in PSK pouch)
vaccuum packed diaper (for my two yr old, also can be used as emergency tinder, dressing, etc)
diaper changing pad
edcpsk010.jpg

PSK - the contents of the Janus Ext...
starting from the left BSA signal mirror and fresnal lens
Izula and SAK, lifeboat matches, BIC (wedged with ziptie), Zippo with Z-plus insert
corona tool used as scraper for magnesiunm bar, firesteel w/P-38 striker, Magnesium bar, tinder quick (2x packs of 10)
BSA compass w/ rotating bezel (works as good as any base plate compass)
plastic gift card wrapped with copious amount of duck tape, space blanket
(not pictured) Fox Micro whistle, its tucked in a flap on the front
edcpsk020.jpg

the beauty of using the Janus clip is I can disconnect it and clip it in to any other belt or strap... or double the clips back and clip them together and I can carry it on my belt alone. I would lose a lot of other items that way but its still an option and very small.

Critique away!

Must have RAT Pack # and POST a Picture of your PSK built around a RAT Cutlery knife.

I had some time today to snap some pics of my contest entry. I took TTD's instructions literally and went with a PSK based on the H.E.S.T. (survival is in the name!) and some of PICT's ideas, as well as my own. I limited this entry to 3 pictures as directed--more available upon judges' request. :D

Here is my H.E.S.T. PSK being worn by yours truly:

627990729_ZkptL-M.jpg

Here are the contents:

627989920_df2Zu-XL.jpg

1. Princeton Tech LED flashlight (mounted front/directed down)
2. Katadyn Water purification tabs x2 (enough for 2L), each is individually wrapped.
3. #6 fish hooks (coated) x 3. I like the coated type beause they can look like small worms and protect the hook from rust. These are duct taped to the sheath.
4. Plastic handcuff key. (on back, at top, easy to access)
5. R.A.T. survival tips card with 25' of monofilament, 6# test, and 25' x2 kevlar sailmakers thread.
6. Hacksaw.
7. Ferrocerium rod & Waxed jute tinder.
8. Sailmaker's needle and leather needle.

Other: Button compass worn on lanyard. Second ferrocerium rod woven into handle. Surgical tubing worn on lanyard (can be used to collect water, make tourniquet, or make sling shot). Inner tube (can be used for tinder or slingshot construction). And lastly, 6' of paracord for neck lanyard & approximately 8' paracord wrapped on handle.

The whole kit weighs 240 grams (little over 1/2#) and is comfortable to wear. I have a simpler, Izula-based kit that is more comfortable, but the H.E.S.T. is a bigger knife with more functionality.

The whole kit is a little thinner than the button compass is wide, here's a picture of the thickness of the kit:

627992189_PSB56-M.jpg

This kit addresses several of the most important aspects of survival and then some: fire, navigation, water, signaling, and even shelter. I really liked PICT's idea about carrying a needle and thread--seems trivial until you need it. The kevlar thread is very strong (I tested it @ 5#, but I bet it would be closer to 6-7# test) and it could be used for fishing line, snares, or even improvised suture. The small light is very handy and I like PICT's mounting position in the front where it can be used without removing it from the over-sized "ranger band".
