Long time since we had one of these. Winner based on the first to accurately post the answers here.

The Contest requires you to summon up all you never
knew about the early 17th century and to arrange
these events in historical order. Just to make sure
you aren't guessing, some of the hints have blanks
(underlined) in which you must provide the missing
information. First to post the right answer receives
a lightly used Protech Stinger from masterchef and a traser glow
ring from fracmeister.

a) The Peace of Alais ends the _____________ revolt
b) The French philosopher and mathematician who
published Essay pour les coniques at age 16 is born. He was
named __________________________
c) An English astronomer is born whose discovery is
associated with one of the greatest American authors
and humorists of the 19th century. What linked
them?_____________________
d) The inventor of the barometer is born. He is
named __________________
e) Someone named Abel discovers something that will
be named after him. What was it? Hint, he also
discovers the future home of the "All Blacks".
f) The commercial collapse of the Dutch tulip trade
g) A German Chemist discovers a very useful low pH
liquid. What was his name? __________________
h) The first coffee shop opens in London
i) Salem Mass. settled by Roger Conant. What was the settlement originally called? _________

:p

Edited to clarify that (b) is the birth year of the individual

Close. Wrong chemist (but a good guess). What useful low pH liquid did your guy invent?

Also, the order isn't quite right. At least one of them is WAY off.

D. Evangelista Torricelli
I. Naumkeag
A. Huguenot
F. 1637
B. Blaise Pascal
E. Tasmania
H. 1652
C. Mark Twain born and died when Halley's comet was visable
G. Georg Ernst Stahl

I can't find any low pH stuff by that guy either.
Georg Ernst Stahl? man that is an obscure guy. But my guy generated a VERY useful low pH fluid we still use today and it involved oil of vitriol and salt..........

The order isn't quite right still but I am double checking mine!!

Torricelli
Naumkeag
huguenot
1637
Pascal
tasmania
1652
Haleys comet
Glauber-Glaubers Salt

probably the wrong order

Phillip

Right chemist.... the salt isn't the low pH stuff and we need the date for it. I'll wager you all know the chemical formula for it. I am hitting the sack though. Should be solved by AM.

And let's not edit posts from here on down ok? It will be hard to tell who had the right answers first that way.

1604 (birthdate) g) A German Chemist discovers a very useful low pH
liquid. What was his name? Johann Rudolph Glauber

1623 birth (1640 publication ) b) The French philosopher and mathematician who
published Essay pour les coniques at age 16 is born. He was
named Blaise Pascal

1626 i) Salem Mass. settled by Roger Conant. What was the settlement originally called? Naumkeag

(1629),a) The Peace of Alais ends the Huguenot revolt

1637 f) The commercial collapse of the Dutch tulip trade

1656 c) An English astronomer is born whose discovery is
associated with one of the greatest American authors
and humorists of the 19th century. What linked
them? Mark Twain (american author) said he was goign to die when the Halley comet return to Earth (Edmund H. (english astronomer)

1642 e) Someone named Abel discovers something that will
be named after him. What was it? Hint, he also
discovers the future home of the "All Blacks". TASMANIA

1643 d) The inventor of the barometer is born. He is
named Evangelista Torricelli

1652 h) The first coffee shop opens in London

some outhors say its 1602, some 1604, still the first on the list tho

he discovered Hydrochloric acid (also known as chlorhydric acid, muriatic acid and spirit of salt) in 1648 in case it wsasnt teh birthdate, so that should do it

btw newknifeguy, were you just copying pasting my post??????? :D :p

Tracer-san, I was:) :D ;) , but I thought I had it earlier. Here is what I got:

1608 Evangelista Torricelli born (barometer)

1626 Naumkeag

1627 Huguenot revolt

1637 tulip trade collapse

1640 Blaise Pascal

1642 Tasmania

1648 Glauber discovery

1652 coffee shop

1656 Halley born, Mark Twain born and died when comet was visable

Win or lose, an excellent exercise, (but I still want the knife

;) ) Peace, Josh

we just have to wait fracmeister's decision, since you placed the birthdate of Torricelli and I placed the date of the actual discovering of the barometer.
I believe mine's correct, since we had to look for what and when for Glauber... but again, who knows

I'll let you have the light If i win :p

Blaise Pascal (born 1623)

Naumkeag (settled in 1626)

Huguenot (1629)

1637

Tasmania (voyage of 1642)

Evangelista Torricelli (experiment of 1643)

Johann Glauber (discovered hydrochloric acid{ Made by distilling common salt and Green Vitriol} in 1648)* I like Franciscus dele Bo Sylvius here, discoverd gin in 1650.

1652

Halley’s comet (Edmund Halley born 1656,computed in 1705 that a bright comet was periodic. Twain predictated he would die on the comet's return in 1910)

Regards,
Greg

edit: Darn, way too slow getting this back up.
Thanks for the contest!
Congrats to the winner!

Tracer-san,

The question said "An English astronomer is born":)

I'll let you have the light if I win;) ;) :D !

Nice playing with you:)

OK, COntest is over. First the RIGHT (at least according to me and "The timetables of History" by Bernard Grun
D 1608 Torricelli is born (born was pretty clear...1643 was the discovery of the barometer and he died in 1647. newknifeguy seems to have read this one correctly)
B 1622 Blaise Pascal 1623? doesn't matter, still in this position...(tracer-san and ripper have this right and newknifeguy stayed with the 1640 date)
I 1626 Naumkeag
A 1629 Huguenot
H 1632 was the first coffee shop in London. Everyone seems to have settled on 1652 (see http://www.ediblelondon.co.uk/tea_and_coffee.asp, http://www.partnerscoffee.com/story-of-coffee.htm, etc.) However, an equal number of web references cite 1632 (see http://www.gocreate.com/History/ra17.htm, http://www.renfound.org/renaissance.html, http://www.dimensional.com/~randl/holm/dionin.htm. etc.) Fortunately the winner doesn't hinge on this call.
F 1637 tulip trade collapse
e 1642 Tasmania discovered
G 1648 Glauber discovers HCl acid.
C 1656 Sir Edmund Halley is born--discoverer of the comet that associated him with Mark Twain

In short, no one seems to have gotten the answer dead on. Newknifeguy and tracer-san proposed the most nearly correct solutions first and ripper's answers were pretty close so I propose adding another prize so that all three get something. Email me your addresses and we'll ship a knife out to all three. I'll cover the other knife as masterchef hasn't had as much fun with this as I have!

PS, next time I do a contest it will be easier to judge!
