In a different thread, the idea of fire making was bandied about and it made my realize that my fire making skills are probably not all that great. I've made fire using many different techniques, but one thing I have not tried is to make a fire with just a ferro-rod and what's available in the natural environment. This sparked the idea of a contest in my mind: pretend you are lost and have only a ferro rod with you, could you start a fire?

Prize: either my slightly used nimravus

or

a spanking new RAT Fire Kit:

Rules:

1) Start a fire using nothing other than a Ferrocerium (Misch metal) rod and what nature provides. No artificial or made made strikers allowed.

2) You cannot use man made objects whatsoever, even if found in a natural setting, e.g. glass, rusty pen knife, wire, soda can.

3) You can not use prepared tinder, e.g. cotton balls, Coleman's tinder, jute twine, char cloth. (of course you can make your own tinder from natural, fond, materials)

4) You cannot use a knife to prepare the fire wood or tinder or make sparks. Not even a little bit. This is a 'no knife' scenario.

5) You must be 18 years old and legally able to own the above knife to claim the knife prize. Those less than 18 years old can still compete for the RAT Fire Kit and some pride.

6) You must post pictures of your ferro-rod, striker, set-up, and fire. Marshmallows optional.

7) You must make the fire after the time of this post. No pictures of the fire you made yesterday.

8) First person to post pictures of their ferro rod, striker, set-up, and fire wins and gets his/her choice of prize.

9) Second person to do so wins the other prize (unless he/she is less than 18 years old and only the knife is available. Sorry)

10) I can play too. If I start said fire before one of you, I'm gettin' the RAT kit.

11) Honor system applies.

So, to the pyro's go the spoils!

I'll give it a go tomorrow. I'm not in it for the prize, just for fun; so if I come in first, give the prize, or prizes, to someone else.

Paper birch. A good friend of mine swears my it. Every hike, if you see some, put some in your pocket.

Me too. For me it's all about the PRIDE...and confidence.

Yep. Also, it's not really fair, since I've done this exact thing a number of times, and demonstrated it for a few people.

When I first got my GG fire steel, I kinda went nuts for a few days. What set me off was someone in another thread mentioning that it would probably work with any sharp edge. I, of course, set out to test it. Yep, it will work with virtually any sharp, hard edge: glass (a no-no for this contest), stone or steel (another no-no for this contest).

I often walk the undeveloped section of Balboa Park. On one of my excursions I picked up a couple of rocks and banged them together. One split into a nice little chopper blade. I brought that home with me and tried it on my new GG fire steel, and it worked just fine. I then walked across the street and collected some dead, dried grass (not lawn grass, but the long-stemmed weeds that are growing there). I rolled it between my hands to crumble it, set it down, and went at it with the fire steel. Only took a couple of strikes to get smoke, and a couple of puffs of breath to get fire.

Now that I've provided instructions, have at it guys: it's fun!

Yup! White birch is a godsend. Just peel it up real thin and give it a spark or two and you have some serious heat on your hands! If you don't have a striker...just use a sharp-edged rock. Ought to do the trick nicely, though it'd be harder to control. :)

Good contest idea, Rotte!

I won't enter this one... but what a great idea Rotte! This gets everyone out there and trying.

I may go out tomorrow... if so I'll give it a go and post pics.

Here's my ferro... (1/2" x 12")

Cool - I'm doing this on my lunch break tomorrow. Of course, anymore thats the only time I see light :(

Maybe I'll throw a rock at goose with my DocCanada sling while I'm at it :)

Cool. Gonna go for a walk and burn stuff tomorrow!

any ideas on what to use for a striker?

For starters, I plan to use my cutting wit :D

Awesome sword Rick - you gonna put 80lb jute wrap on that hilt??

Oh wait, no man made tools.... just read that.....

Okay.... let me try this little guy....

If I had a camera, I would do it just for the practice. No need for the prize, as I make a fire with my firesteel everyday anyway :D

KGD already knows I don't use a knife for a striker anyway

let's play!!
here are the pictures.

got it!!!

here's my striker, I found a little rock that was kinda sharp enough to trow some good sparks.
this took me a while though. waaay more than with a man made striker.
you made this difficult for me, rotte.

Sharp rocks work pretty well though, and the sharper the rock, the better the spark.

more pictures.
in the beginning... it was hard, I could get a little ember and it would die.
aDSC_4445.jpg

this happened several times. like 30 or so. sometimes I could get things going, and then it went off.
so, after several attempts and a sore arm from striking the darn thing. I managed to get a good size ember and blow some air to help me.
aDSC_4455.jpg

overall, it wasn't that hard to find a suitable piece of rock, but to get a hang of the technique to use it instead of a regular striker. that was the tricky part.
and the high humidity didn't help me either.

Hector --

Looks like you won first place! Well done. It looks like you used a combination of pine needles and leaves for your tinder. Am I right that the pine needles caught that spark?

You said it was more difficult than starting a fire with a regular striker or knife. Was just the awkwardness of the rock? (Nice write up though!)

Congrats man, which prize do you claim?

And who will win second?

I don't think I would have even attempted that as a tinder bundle. Still, I'm glad to know that it can be done with pine needles like that.

Agreed, I've tried a similar tinder bundle and found it very difficult also. I'd be somewhat reluctant to call it 'tinder' even. I suspect Hector's persistence really paid off here--way to go!
