Contouring micarta handles???

I want to mod the handles on my BAC LE to be more contoured like a Fusion Magnum handle. What method should I try that will remove just a little at a time so I don't go too far? How do you make them symmetrical? Anyone know what they do to get the groove in there so it's not just smoothed. I figure if I just take sand paper to them they will be smooth and I'll need to redo the grooves, right? How?

maybe a router? or drill press?

the sandpaper works well to contour/shape the micarta. i have done a few myself.

:):)

Hey! You posted this in the right forum this time. :p

I think BAN or Grinducci can answer this. They'll be along shortly I am sure. Me? I'd drive real fast in my car and use the asphalt as a giant grinder belt.:thumbup:

I've sanded a few sets of Micarta. . . well one G10. I didn't re-texture them. I wanted smooth and got smooth. I don't know if anyone could really do a decent job short of a checkering of some sort.

I use a 1" X 24" wide belt sander (soon, I'll be using my 2" X 72" KMG) to do the roughing, then I hold the knife in the knife vise I made to hand sand the handle to the final contour. I make them symmetrical by eyeing them, just takes practice. I don't put grooves back in mine, but a small round file, a dremel tool with a small dia. bit would work or maybe sand paper on a very small metal rod. The micarta is easy to work so don't be afraid to try, especially if you do it by hand, you can go slow. :D

Cool, thanks guys.

So far I like Ham Solo's asphalt technique the best. The Git 'er Done school of thought. That's probably what I'll do.

I use an orbital sander, and as Randucci said, eyeball em until they look right.

You can also work slower and just start with files to get the shape on the micarta you want. Then move on to sandpaper in varying grits. Polish off with some OOOO steel wool and oil :) Personally I start with a 36 grit belt on a Bader BIII but that's just my method :D
