I need to pick y'all's brain on something. In February I will be celebrating 25 years of being brain tumor free, and I want to do something special with a knife to commemorate this. I want a folder, and am not sure whether to fork over the money for a custom or have a higher end production/semi-production knife customized.

I'm not a big fan of metal handles, but am willing to make an exception for this. One side will have the date of the surgery, the other the ABTA and MAGIC foundation symbols. Thanks for the help.

Oh, and if I did go the custom route, which makers would y'all suggest?

I am not sure what to say besides that I can't imagine where you've been, but I am really happy that you're still here, and hope you live a long, happy, and healthy life...

I would suggest Alan Davis if you are looking to build a one of a kind heirloom folder.
He just makes one of a kind heirlooms all the time. He's just that talented and passionate...

Here is a look at his work, he is very active on the forum...
I suggest you start at the last page and work backwords as his work now is at an extremely high level.

^^^ My recommendation as well. I have several of Alan's knives and I'll agree that his talent and passion for his work are remarkable. He'll make a one-of-a-kind for you that sort of fits your one-of-a-kind experience. CRK can do the custom graphics for you, but I suspect that the wait will be long... probably longer than waiting for a custom knife from a maker like Alan Davis.

Thank you for your input. I will be contacting Alan shortly.

You are more then welcome.

Besides being a superb craftsmen, Alan is also a really great guy.

I am sure that he will be able to make this work.....

Price is going to depend a lot on the materials you choose. Great thing about Alan is that he works with just about any material you can name!

That's a really great idea. Sorta like my DDR AA birthday knife.

A Sebenza 25 with custom engraving is about as good an answer as I can think of. :)

I got a reply from Alan this morning via email. He is backed up and not taking new orders, but said he would this because of the occasion.

Design wise, my thoughts are thus:

3.25" Damascus wharncliffe
Wood handles, with a cut out on each side with the ABTA and MAGIC foundation symbol on one side and the dates 02/27/91-/02/27/16 on the other. Or, have it jeweled or etched into the wood.
It will be a flipper with bearings

This all leads to my next questions:

What style/design damascus do y'all recommend, or at least think is worth looking at?
What wood would go good with all this? Solid handle, or bolster and wood?

Thank you all for your input. I'll be talking to him on the phone later today.

Well a lot has changed after talking with Alan. Finalizing things as such

3.25" modified wharncliffe, Rob Thomas CPM-154/440C damascus
Ironwood handle with black and gold M3 bolster
gold ano'd screws/pivot
M3 black and gold half back spacer
MAGIC foundation and ABTA symbols etched on one side of the blade, 2/27/91-2/27/16 etched on the other side.
Liner lock
gold ano'd liners, with some file work.

I also just bought a Bocote large sebenza 21, and I sold my ZT 0561.

Good to hear! Pics are a must once you get it. Glad also you are remaining in good health, and hoping for you to enjoy the custom steel brother!

awesome. Looking forward to seeing this one. Please keep us updated! Oh, and congrats for the obvious reason!

Congratulations on the 25 years...I can relate. All our other little worries are pretty much a joke in comparison.
