Apparently I've been a good influence on some people here at college. There are about 15 people in my dorm unit, and last term the only knives around were mine. I really made a conscious effort to show people how fun and useful a good knife can be, and I think it worked. We just got back a few days ago, and almost everybody in my unit showed up with a nice knife. The current inventory in the hall (not including my knives) is:

2 Buck 110s
1 Buck NXT
1 Gerber Gator
1 Gerber EZ-Out
1 Schrade Old Timer Stockman
2 Spyderco Delicas
2 Spyderco Spydercards

Also a bunch of Leathermans and SAKs.

It's pretty cool, you can actually stand in the hall and every few seconds hear a folder snapping open.

There are a few people who still don't get it. Yesterday the guy who still asks "What do you guys need all these knives for?" came to my room asking to borrow a ballpoint pen. He needed to borrow one because his pen broke when (get ready) he tried to use it to open up a package.

That's cool so long as your college has no problems with it. I know that for me, even though in NYC it's legal to carry knives with < 4" blade, on campus, I could get in to a lot of trouble if the security guards caught me with it.

Just like spending time on this forum is fine on your own time and your own computer, but when you use company time and computers, you can get in to trouble for it. :D

Thank god they're cool dudes.

Yeah, the administration here is fairly cool with knives. Anthing under 4" is unrestricted and something bigger is OK as long as you get an RA's approval.

I suppose thats because about 80% of the students are Mechanical Engineering majors, so the blades around here really are carried as tools as opposed to some Rambo fantasy. As far as I know there has never been a problem with irresponsible use that would give them a reason to change this policy

Wow! 4"? Here at the University of Illinois, our limit is 3". One of my friends was carrying a BM 730BT when he worked in a computer lab I think. He needed it to open boxes and cut plastic ties, and when a UI PD officer saw it, he told him that "weapons" were not allowed on the campus, and took it from him even though it was probably pretty obvious he was carrying it for work. He told me he went to the public safety building and complained, and they returned it to him though.

I've been carrying my 2-3/4" Opinel #6 and my Buck Mini-Strider to be under the 3" limit though. I think length limits are pretty stupid. Whenever I bike to the post office, I have to put my pocket knife inside my bike water bottle and leave it outside before I go in because of the 2.5" blade limit for knives inside a federal building.

Whaaaa...? Humph... if that's the case, then I've been ...well, nevermind... for about 200 days a year for the past 4 years. I'm sure they'd freak if they knew what I'm carrying right now. And don't even get me started regarding what was kept in my dorm room my senior year..... .

Oh well, I suppose I'm glad at least someone is obeying the rules. Good man, chang. And I'm not saying that facetiously. I have respect for someone who follows the rules even when there is little chance of being caught.

Fishbulb, you must be in the South. Here in the politically correct North East, that would never go over. Good going.

BTW, college days for me are a distant (but happy) memory.:)

During my years in boarding school I remember we were flicking open butterfly knives in class, never problem. Needless to say it wasn't in America. We were allowed to carry and show any knife any length, and we were never questioned about it. It was the only time of my life when people around me had atleast as many knives on their person as I did/do.
Also I have to say that NO ONE EVER got hurt, except maybe for the occasional student accidentally cutting him/herself, but never anything serious.
When there would be a fight between two students no one would even dream of doing a stupid thing like taking out the knife. And so everything remained good for us.
I learned more about knives during that time than at any other time. It was great!!!

Chang, unless you have to go thru detectors at your local P.O., I wouldn't worry about your knife in your pocket. the rule you've read about really has to do with employees in fed buildings, courts, and tourist sites in D.C. - all places that have scanners. Good grief, I trade knives all the time and bring 'em right up to the counter to be posted (in the box, naturally :D )

hey just dont be flipping them open in the halls and youll have nothing to worry about. Dont brandsih it as a weapon EVER even in a joking manner. I have never had a prob in any dorm I have lived in or visited. I visit my friends often in Maryland and Massachusets and never had a problem. Your gonna run into problems when you leave em all laying around in teh open. Get a good folder with a pocket clip and dont flash the darn thing.
