I've been reading about the sandpaper/mousepad method of convex sharpening on here for ages, but never tried it...until last night. Now I'm convexing everything I can get my hands on, even my Tenacious!

My question is this: The highest grit of wet/dry I can find is 400. With this, and a little stropping, I can get my edges to slice paper, but I want more! :D Where are y'all getting your higher grits of sandpaper? Is there a particular brand that cuts better/lasts longer? Thanks for the info.

Local hardware store. Look for Silicon Carbide or Aluminum Oxide if they don't have the former. Closed grit is better for a finer polished finish.

You can get grits in the 2k range. Most people are fine with 600-800 and finishing with a loaded strop.

Your local auto parts store will have grits up to 2000 but as of late I have been using lapping film, it seems to cut faster and last longer than sandpaper. It also produces a much sharper edge at the finer grits.

I still use sandpaper up to 400 or 600 grit then after that its the 15 micron, 5 micron LF and then a leather strop(s) with vairous diamond compounds.

Higher grits are in the automotive section of any of the big box stores (Walmart).

The highest I personally use is 1000.
