Convex Edge on a BK2

Which of you guys have a convex edge on your BK2?

I have never tried to make a convex edge, but have read up on it.....I have sandpaper and a mousepad. I tried it on a $5 throwaway knife and didn't get good results so I think I'm doing something wrong.

I just bought the diamond sticks for the Sharpmaker. I have heard people suggest knocking off the shoulders to 15' and then moving forward with the convex. How exactly is the best way to go about doing that, though?

Also, how would a BK11/EsKabar hold up with a convex edge? I'm assuming the thicker blades would work better since you have a thicker back to curve inward.

convex guy here.. I'd try your throw away again.. check your edge with light reflection.. the bk2 is a little harder to sharpen because of its thickness.. I've never done the mousepad gig yet but many do.. If I were you got to the tinkering/embellishment forum and do a search on convex...

keep trying on your cheapo you'll get the hang of it.

good luck

I never got great results after using a mousepad. At least, not to shaving sharp. I find that sandpaper over leather works much better. I think, because the mousepad was so soft, I was rounding the edge out. If you aren't getting decent results, maybe try a piece of leather backed by glass/wood...

+1 to Daze's post. Lots of practice really helps!

I think I was rounding it out too.

I have dabbled with leatherworking so I have some around, as well as some flat glass to put sandpaper on for a saber-grind/knife sharpening. I'll give it a try again before I ruin a nice knife!
