convex edge question

I know this has been dealt with before, because I ran a search. Does anyone have any pictures of what the set up and the sharpening action looks like? For some reason, I read the directions and can't quite figure out how to do it. For example, the sharpmaker video was the greatest, because I saw how to do it.

Thanks a bunch.

1 - belt sander = freehand "power" sharpening
2 - file or butcher's steel = "wag the dog" method
3 - mousepad = strop method

I'm sorry I don't have more time - gotta finish packing for tomorrow's trip. When I get back, I can send you a CD. Maybe somebody else could copy it for you.

Anyway - Best of luck with your sharpening....looks like you've been bit by the bug.

Thank you that would be great. I can wait for the CD if you could send me one, but if anyone can copy it for me post here or let me know and I'll get you my shipping information.

Shann, do you know how to use a strop on your knives?

If so then using the mouse pad and sandpaper is very similar. By holding the knife at about a 20* angle you will get a convexed edge using the soft mouse pad. You need to push down hard enough too see the rubber deflect under the pressure from the edge.

I'm afraid to admit my ignorance. Although my Dad was an all around mechanic and machinist my parents split up when I was young and I never learned a thing about tools!

I think I know how to do it. Unlike using a stone where you "slice" the stone with the leading edge you have a trailing edge right?

Right. And never be afraid to admit you don't have any skills. When we all started we didn't know anything either.:D ;)

I said that for about three years before I could get a shaving edge which was "convex like". You have to play with it for awhile, cuss a little and then put it away for awhile.

One day I got it sort of right and ended up with no hair on my forearms. :)
