Just took my 5 out for some winter camping. used the factory edge all up.
I convexed my 3 a little while ago, and I love it. I am wanting to convex my 5 and becker necker san mai also.

but.... i am just worried about not being able to touch the edge up out in the field. I know everyone says that you just strop it up in the field. I am using the 5 for batoning, chopping everything, everything everything survival camping related. I am just worried that I wont be able to strop it back to hair shaving up out in the middle of butt eff no where. where as if i take it back to the factory 20 degree, I can take a little pocket sharpener in the pouch and get it relatively sharp again.

hope you guys can help

Make a small field strop out of a free paint stirring stick. Keep it in a bag with a few pieces of sandpaper for touchups. Done.

My 4 is convexed and I touched it up on my Sharpmaker the other day. Just need to touch up the edge, don't have to reprofile anything. Next time I might touch it up with sandpaper or the Sharpmaker again. Not a huge issue.

Great article in the first issue of Self Reliance Illustrated on field sharpening.

yeah I have seen a bunch of them, seen a couple about the little paint stir stick strop thing, but I was worried about having to reprofile. I guess if I grab some little strips of sand paper and lay them on top of the strop I could reprofile them.
thanks errrbody

If I was going to do alot of field sharpening I'd stick to a v grind. But that is just me. If it was a chopper I'd think different.

Wait... You want to REPROFILE it on the field? If you want to sharpen in field you just need a strop and maybe some sandpaper. If you want to reprofile in field that's a different story @.@

I had the same thoughts that you did. At one time I had all my ESEE's convexed but after some time in n out of the field decided to go back to a V just for an ease of sharpening in the field. Adam pointed out a real easy way to make a field expedient sharpener for convexed blades. It really comes down to personal preference and what you feel comfortable with. Give each of them a try a see which one is best for you.

Convex grinds are pretty easy to maintain in the field since sandpaper weighs next to nothing and a piece of leather with some compound should maintain the edge fairly well.

Convex that thing! Worst case in the field just carry the paint stick strop and sandpaper or carry a small dogbone to touch up the edge at say 40 degrees inclusive if needed. The when you get back home just go back to the sandpaper and you are set. Remember....just because it is convex doesnt mean your knife will explode if you have to throw a microbevel on it. However even with HARD use stropping properly can do wonders.

You an also just touch up the edge of a convex edge knife on a regular hone... you just need to adjust the angle that you are holding the knife at.... and make it a bit steeper so it just touches the edge. o this all the time with a ceramic pocket hone

+1 on this! You'll never regret! ;)
