Other than the Opinel -
what other folders are there with Convex grinds -
or at least convexed edges?

Thanks,

I think most of the older Gerber lockbacks from the '70's and '80's had convexed blades, 440C steel, too. I see them on E-bay from time to time, with prices ranging from great to too much.

Hello People!

I am new to this forum. I am sure we will be seeing each other here quiet often :)

The topic of convex ground blade really caught my eyes. I've heard from many that this is supposingly the best possible blade geometry one can ever acquire. (If I am not mistaken, I think even Mr. Bill Moran's productions are all convex ground.)

However, quite a few friends of mine who are obviously flat-ground blade "worshippers" tend to criticise about the difficulty in re-sharpening as to a convex blade a lot...

So, I wonder, how do you feel about these blade geometries?

The fully convex blade has some great advantages, with only a couple of real disadvantages, IMHO. A convex blade has more steel, so it is quite a bit heavier. A full convex grind makes for a hefty knife. Also, a convex ground blade is wider in cross section. So a convex blade doesn’t always fit into a hard to reach spot like a flat or hollow ground blade. The convex grind is definitely my favorite grind for outdoor work, where lots of woodworking will be done. For normal utility work, I’ve come to appreciate a full flat grind with a high convex edge bevel.

I definitely find convex grinds to be vastly easier and quicker to sharpen, especially on simple carbon steel and alloy knives. It takes some practice, but it’s worth it. Often, all that is needed for touching up the edge is a piece of rough cardboard.

The 73x series from Benchmade usually have a thick double bevel that behaves almost like a convex edge and can easily be converted to a quite obtuse convex edge (not recommended). Otherwise, pop off the thumbstuds of any folder and break out the silicon carbide sandpaper.

Do these Marbles Safety Folders have convex grinds?

I know I could ask Marbles -
I did, on their Safe Grip series of fixed blades - MarblesOutdoors.com told me that series do NOT have convex grinds but are V-shaped.
However MarblesKnives.com told me these do have convex grinds....
er-hum......

So anyone who actually has one of these folders please tell us if it has a convex grind?
