Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience sharpening convex/appleseed grinds on large blade shapes that are not linear.

I'm thinking like Kukri style machetes, or big camp knives with a recurve belly (think Kershaw Outcast, Spyderco Forrester) etc.

How would you strop/polish something like this? The mousepad method seems hard to use.

To put a convex edge on one of those, I use a Harbor Freight 1x30" belt grinder - it's actually very simple. I can use the same machine to hone/polish it, or keep it touched up with my usually block strop/hone: wood + leather + polishing compound. When the recurve gets too deep for the flat of the strop/hone, just use the edge or corner. The knife won't know the difference!

Surgi-Sharp makes leather belts for 1x30 and 1x42 belt sanders that do a fine job of polishing with any number of different pastes. Recurves shouldn't be a problem.

thank you, i guess i need to try that out..

i've been trying with mousepad but it didn't really work well :P

Where do you guys buy your polishing compounds usually (i live in Canada so the stores are a bit more limited)

you can try wrapping that mousepad with sandpaper around a wood dowel or pipe of the right diameter (it doesn't have to be any particular size). this will act just the same, but will be easier to use with a deep recurve.

I have used several different sizes of PVC pipe with mousepad.
