This is my attempt to make convex sharpening pads. I got some paint stirrers from the hardware store (free) along with various sandpaper grits (2000,1000,600,150,80) and contact cement. I scored a couple of old mouse pads from work to use for backing. I roughed up the stirrer, the pad and the back of the sandpaper with some 60 grit paper then glued the pad to the stirrer and then the sand paper to the pad. I let it sit overnight and it was ready to go the next day. The 2000 is pretty much a waste of time except for maybe polishing and the 1000 is pretty fine too. If I can find some 800 that might work better for a final pass. I'm no expert but I've had good results on the Rat Tail and the Public Defender. I can't get either of them as sharp as my Rat Trap was from the shop. (It has only seen a light stropping on untreated leather.) You can either clamp the sharpening pad to a surface and drag the blade or clamp the knife down and drag the sharpener. If anybody else tries or has tried this method let us know what your results are.
