Convex grind - when do you know if you got it right?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I am only using convex grinds on my "outdoor" knives so I decided to try it here.

So after some reading online, I've decided to try putting a convex grind on my mora and my seal 2000.

After about an hour of grinding on the sharpmaker (benchstone config). I now have an edge that feels a lot more "rounded" then before. It shaves, and cuts pretty well. It FEELS totally different when I'm slicing paper before and after this process, is this normal??

Also, my other concern is that when I brush my finger perpendicular to the edge, one side feel more rounded then the other. It seems to cut fine, is this something that I should worry about?

Thanks in advance, please let me know if something doesn't make sense, as this is a longer than usual post for me.

Sounds like you're getting the idea.

One side may indeed be more rounded than the other - that would have to do with the fine details of what your hand is doing when grinding in each direction. Keep an eye on it, and try to adjust.

Cutting a lot of things will feel different with a convex edge against a v-edge.

You will probably want to explore the leather-backed sandpaper approach to making of creating a convex edge as well. Personally, I find it a little easier to get what I want that way.

Cheers!

I think I'm worry because i've never done this before and don't want to find out in the field that my knife won't cut because I want to try something new.

Reliablity is number one for me. I've used the mora for more than half my life (for 15 yrs and I'm 27 now). I know full well of it's capabilities. Now I"m not so sure anymore.

I don't think you will notice any lack of cutting ability if you don't get the grind perfectly even. The only thing I think you would notice is it may have a bias in which direction it wants to travel when you push cut with it (think like a zero grind).
I have been busy convexing myself. The good people over at BRKT have really converted me!

I'll take the dog out for a hike and give it a try. I had a talk with my dad when I visit last night and he didn't even know that there are other ways to sharperen a knife other than convex!

Thanks Will for the wealth of info.

I was wondering if there are any difference in pulling or pushing into the grind??

If you are using materials such as sandpaper and leather, pushing into the grind will cut through your base!
Otherwise, I haven't seen a difference in effectiveness.

Just an update. I cleaned the stone up, and put a fairly even grind on my edge. Took it out hiking yesterday. It cleaning chops up finger size branches with one stroke. Used it to chop up 2 fallen pines (~2" dia) and made a walking stick with it. Still shaving sharp after I got home!! Much better edge retension that when I had a v gind on it.

Thanks guys for all the tips and info!
