convex grind

I have a friend who wants a fairly small neck knife out of 1/16 steel with a convex grind . I don`t know anything about a convex grind or how to make it or if you can do it on 1/16 metal. Did a search but only found how to sharpen , not how to make it . Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it .
Thanks ,
Larry

GLDOYLE,

Although I haven't done one on stock that thin, I don't think it would be a problem. I would:

Cut out the blank and shape it.
Heat treat
Grind with a slack belt all the way to sharp (like a Japanese sword).

It would be one wickedly sharp neck knife.

I agree with the "grind after HT" idea. If you try it before you grind, you risk taking too much steel off - convex grinder's bane. Just go slow and keep the blade cool.

You can put a convex edge on anything steel, any thickness. Just use the slack area of the belt. The harder you push against it, the steeper the angle will be.

I actually work with lower grit belts than I would if I was grinding against the platen. Reason = since there is no "back pressure" while you're grinding, the scratches are not as deep - plus you can vary the pressure. I actually start getting a mirror polish at 120 grit.

Knock the corners off with the contact wheel then go to the slack belt, just takes a couple of minutes.

I do a lot of 1/16" blades with convex grinds.

Thanks for the suggestions . I guess I will jump in and try it and
see what happens . Thanks again ,
Larry
