I am a believer! I love convex grinds now.

Had some time this evening to put a convex grind on my Benchmade Mini Pika. I always wanted to see what a knife with a convex grind could do, and since there are no folders on the market with one -I decided to make my own.

I tried to get it as flat as possible, but still convex. I even squeezed a recurve into it. Came out pretty nice:

The picture's kinda crappy (reflection), but it's a true convex grind, mirror polished and sharp as hell.

I wrapped some newspaper around a marker pen, taped it to the edge of a desk with blue painter's tape (not very strong) and it took a swipe at it, it cut the newspaper cleanly without any effort, without releasing the tape (I repeated this three times and it cut cleanly each time)

Tried it with my Benchmade Griptilian (Pardue 154CM), sharpened on the Edge Pro and stropped on chromium oxide -and it couldn't do this. It would either nick the newspaper or fold it or just knock the whole thing across the room (the tape released) -and this knife is really sharp.

Give it a try, it ain't easy. I like my Mini Pika better now.

Very cool. I like the pics. I like the PIKA and the Grip models. Great knives for the price. Is the Grip now convex edged?

I think if you sharpen a double bevel edge and rub in on the strop/hone in a very flat manner you will end up with a redneck's version of a compound edge. The stropping will take off the separation between the main secondary bevel and the tiny primary micro-bevel, sort of rounding out the transition from the one to the other. This is not a pure convex edge but sort of a smoothed out double bevel edge that works like a convex edge.

Take that rolled up paper, only roll it so that the paper does not overlap, set the tube on its end, and try to cut it without knocking the bottom of the tube over! Convex will help the blade move through things like wood, whereas other grinds will have more of a tendency to bind up.
