Hello everyone. I aquired my first Convex Edge knife in a trade today. It is razor sharp but I want to know how to sharpen it when the time comes. I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker. It can turn into a benchstone. So essentially what im asking is: How do I sharpen a convex edge with a benchstone?

Thanks guys!:D

How do I sharpen a convex edge with a benchstone?

You don't.

Well, you can, especially if you just want to put a micro bevel on it. But it's kind of difficult to maintain the nice curvature with a flat stone.

Some use the "slack" portion on their belt grinder; most use a mousepad or piece of leather with sandpaper on top of it. Either way, the backing (or lack of it) has enough give to let the paper conform to the convex. That way you keep the original grind and sharpen/polish right down to the edge.

Just stroke it backwards (away from the edge, spine first) and roll or lift the back as you do so, rather than edge-first. Also, try a search on this forum: someone contributed a useful sketch. Flat benchstones work just fine for convex edges.

You can sharpen convex edges on a benchstone, but it's not ideal and very hard. Get a old ball mousepad with sandpaper instead, it's very cheap.

Don't lisssen to them. It is easy and is my prefered method to sharpen a convex with a bench hone. I scrub back and forth on the hone. Just use lite pressure and ride the curve of your convexed knife. It is easier to do than it is to post about. I always finish with a rocking edge first stroke.

I dont have the time or money(mostly time) to get into convex sharpening at the time. What are the advantages of having a convex edge??

Sandpaper and a mouse pad is very cheap, do a search on convex edges and you will learn they have many advantages.
