Anyone had any experience doing convex sharpening with a sanding block? It's my first time convex sharpening and I'm using this method. Don't know if my technique is wrong or the whole sanding block thing is a bad idea. The knife being sharpened is a spydie pacific salt w/ the factory grind on it. I know that reprofiling a blade can take a while, but how long is too long? BTW, the sanding block is 320 grit.

i dont know about the sanding blocks but i use a belt sander to put a convex edge on. i'm in ohio also and if you feel up to a roadtrip i would be glad to help you out.

If you haven't seen them yet, check out these videos.

While they aren't about reprofiling, just sharpening, they are the best out there about convex sharpening!

Appreciate it Richard, got your email too, btw. Unfortunately I work every weekend, at least for the time being. My employer is losing our contract at the end of the month, so it looks like I'll have some free time coming up soon (a little too much free time. I'd never noticed the link on your sig line was a video of your sharpened knives, holy smokes, that cut like a lightsaber!

this block was made specifically for convex sharpening

I've been trying to make something similar for myself... but I'd much rather but one... Do you know the dimensions of that pad? The reason I ask is because I want to use the sand paper that I get from Autozone as it is readily available and I don't have to special order it... I think those sheets are like 4" by about 8"... Just wondering if they will work... I don't want to get stuck having to special order grit sheets over and over from this company.

If you buy the JRE block it comes with pack of sandpaper and a peice of leather. Your can reorder the pack or yes you can use the same stuff you get from autozone.

Ok cool so the regular sandpaper will fit on it... I just don't like having to reorder materials if I can just drive down to AZ and pick up a pack there... They got grits from 200 to 2000. That plus a strop and I got all I need.

Wal-mart has the same stuff, in the auto section. Think I payed $2.89 for a 5 pack in the same size.

A rubber sanding block, the kind used for auto body work, works very well, and should only cost a few dollars. I prefer to use emery paper or cloth, but wet-dry silicon carbide abrasive paper works fine also. Spritz with WD40 for better abrasive life and cutting action.
