I finally tried convexing, I didn't think it would be so easy. I tried it first with my bk11. Right after I did it on that one I had to convex my Izula!

I know its not perfect but Im sure with a little more practice I'll get better. I think my HEST will be next :D

Looks pretty good....did you use the sandpaper over mouse pad set-up?

it looks damn good to me. but then again i never tried convexing anything. oh well - if it cuts it's good

Yeap, about as simple as it gets, other than maybe a scandi grind. Sandpaper works great for the finishing touches. As you sharpen when the edge gets too rounded you can wrap the sandpaper around a ruler or a block of wood to get a flat surface and buff down the bump. I do this every few weeks on my hand sharpened users and it keeps the edge nice and acute.

Wow, man that looks like a pro job. I bet that feels good to see an edge like that on your knife that you put on by hand. Bragging rights:thumbup:

Yup he's right. I have to knock the shoulders off my knife every month as well, otherwise the more you sharpen the duller your knife gets. I went nuts during that stage.

Did you thin the shoulders first when you did this? Or just go straight to the sandpaper? I've been toying with the idea of convexing my Izula, just because sharpening is so easy. I did my grandfather's Old Timer this weekend and it's amazing now. I'm pretty sure I'm doing the rest of my knives now.

I have been meaning to do this with my Izula but have not got around to it yet. Actually, what I have really been meaning to do is buy another one, strip it and then convex it:D

Does the coating clog up the sandpaper when you do this?

Good job on the Izula. My 3 didn't really need it, though I convexed it anyway, but I found my Izula's performance much improved after convexing it. The convex edge baffles lots of folks and I've never been sure why. It's not rocket science and it doesn't need lots of hard work. You don't even need sandpaper/mousepad or a belt grinder to do it. If you give a child a knife and a stone and tell him to sharpen the knife, he'll likely put a convex edge on it.

Does the coating clog up the sandpaper when you do this?

It does, but I've only had issues with it during my initial convexing. Once I get the edge like I want it, the bits with coating no longer have much contact with the sandpaper.
