This was my first try at a true convex edge. Ive been working on getting them on my SOD and RMD but I have always gone slow and just tried to get it closer to convex each time I sharpened.

I decided today I might as well just go for it. And I'm glad I did :D

The regulator is one of my favorite knives but it's so thick and the edge so obtuse from the factory that I could barely slice an apple with it.

I used a bench grinder and started with a 60 grit wheel to take off the steel. I then moved to the gritted paper wheel and blended together all the angles. Finished it up with the slotted wheel and while it is far from perfect the regulator now slices like the dickens  The difference performance between the convex and my regulator with the factory grind is unbelievable. I think the SOD is up next for a convex.

I messed up on removing the coating on one side put it doesn't effect the performance so I didn't take the time to fix it.

Looks good. I think I may have to invest in some of the wheels, a grinder, a belt sander, and belts--I do so love a nice convex edge.

Looks good Hunter!
I love my Regulator LE, I think the Regulator is close to perfect for a hard use Bowie design.

How do you like the regulator?

one of my buddys is graduating from college this year and I was gonna get him a knife for a present...

How would you rate it as far as all around utility? If youve had a chance to handle an ESEE6 how do they compare?

What would you say is the best, and the worst quality of the regulator?

Thanks! I just did my SOD tonight. Man I was reallyyyyy nervous for that one but it turned out really well.

Ive owned the ESEE 6 as well and really liked it. For all around utility the regulator is hard to beat. It holds an edge much better than ESEE's 1095 and for its size its a fantastic chopper. However for a pure slicer the 6 is the clear winner. The stock thickness and grind make it much better at slicing but you can't baton or chop as well with it so its a definite trade off. The handles on the 6 feel good and hand but the Regulator's handle is IMO the single best handle ever designed. It has perfect ergonomics for everything from chopping to making a father stick. Seriously I am really hoping it becomes the new "basic" handle for the scrap yard, its ugly but when you use it, it just feels like an extension of your hand.

I actually ended up trading my 6 for another regulator so I guess that answers the question of which one I like best. I think the biggest thing is your buddy's level of experience with knives. If he's really experienced, knows how to sharpen really well, and knows how to use a blade go with the Regulator. If he is newer to knives go with the ESEE 6 because its way easier to sharpen and way easier to use due to the .187 stock vs. .333. The regulators thickness is what makes it special but its thickness also makes it difficult to use. With its factory grind it is a terrible slicer. I would say go with the 6. Its cheaper, easier to sharpen, and comes with a great sheath but either way your buddy will be happy

K is right on as far as the Reg vs E6 debate. Saying that, the Swamp still has some RMD and RMDxLE that are ready for order. Those would be a great gift too.

Thanks for the comparison KalEl. It gives me something to think about, equal warranties, useful designs, good steel...
